My boys just turned 5 mo and are outgrowing their
swing. I've been working with a sleep specialist who,
literally, is a sanity saver. I had her do a speaking
engagement for the moms as well as the Pediatricians at
Kaiser DLC. The parents loved her and I was able t use
what she talked about with the babies. At this point, I
have 1 really good sleeper and one who wakes up twice
through the night (which she is working on with me
now). Her name is Karen Pollak of Babies to Sleep. Her
specialty is twins as she is a mom of twins. She
happened to mention how she's helping a family break
away from the swing. I find these things to be very
helpful:1) Having a bedtime routine (I spend about
15-20 min of cuddly time with them, then change diaper,
change into pj's, swaddle my poor sleeper & use
sleepsack in my good sleeper, put ea baby in their own
corner of the crib w/head touching side of crib, prop
bottles of pre-mixed milk, then turn on their sleep
sheep to rain setting. 2) EVERYONE has to be on board
with doing the night routine the same way. This is my
current problem. My husband thinks it's ok to
swaddle/feed our poor sleeper in front of the t.v. Our
son screams like someone is killing him so I take him,
do the routine, and he falls asleep this way. My mom
thinks he doesn't like to be swaddled & undies it
during first dream feed. He doesn't go back to sleep.
He doesn't like being swaddled but he needs it and
sleeps soundly with it. 3) if/when they wake up in
middle of the night, I don't pick them up AND I go to
them when they first gently start crying. I have milk
ready to go and feed them where they sleep (if both
awake, prop bottle). I made it a point not to pat their
butt or rock them to sleep. I find they don't fully
wake up so it's faster for them to go back to sleep. 4)
I only change their diaper if soaked. This may not be
for everyone, however, I find the way to really wake up
a baby is to change their diaper. So during the bedtime
diaper change, I slather on Balmex. Hope these
suggestions help. Again, I highly recommend Karen
Pollak. She's very sweet
