We also used the Childproofer. At first I thought the
idea was ridiculous and we planned to do it ourselves.
But then I got stuck trying to safeguard our fireplace
(it's an odd size, and has a huge stone hearth I was
worried about babies cracking their skulls on). I
decided to call him and pay the $20 for the
consultation, where he walks through your home and
gives all his recommendations, and then do the install
myself. But then I realized he sells all the
childproofing products (gates, latches etc.) at cost or
just above, so all you're really paying him for is his
time ($85/hour) to install everything. When I totaled
up our time, energy & frustration (plus shipping costs)
to order 3 gates and install them, then drill 4 holes
per each cabinet door latch (4!!!) and screw in all
those tiny screws, I decided paying him $150 to do all
of it in 2 hours was well worth it. I'm sure what your
neighbors spent the $1000 on were the products
themselves, not the labor to have them installed. Those
gates are actually quite expensive, if you get the kind
that are bolted onto the wall so they can open and
close like a door rather than the pressure-mounted ones
that you have to remove every time you want to leave
the room. I highly recommend you hire him for a
consultation and do some comparison shopping for
products -- he lists what he carries & what he charges
for them on his website so it's all transparent. He
also told us things we didn't know about and showed us
products I'd never heard of, and he works FAST. He
braced a tall bookshelf and ditto a large floor mirror
for us -- things we could have done on our own, but it
took him 5 minutes. He was well worth the cost.

I have two and I love them both for different reasons.
My Petunia Pickle Bottom Sashay Satchel converts to a
backpack so it's great for days at the park, airplane
travel etc. It's just a teeny bit too small for long
days or air travel, but then to be honest, I *never*
have enough room for everything because I overpack,
always. I also love the patterns -- it's pretty cute
and fun in my opinion and I love that there are 4
pockets for bottles -- perfect for twin
moms.http://www.petuniapicklebottom.com/collections/original/sashaysatchel/I
also have the Lyndsey bag from Mia Bossi. It's bigger
than my other one and it looks more like a purse, so I
carry this one when I need (a) more space, or (b) I
want to look more put together. When I no longer need a
diaper bag, I'll be converting this into my purse
and/or small carry-on for sure. (P.S. Gilt Groupe often
has half-off deals on Mia Bossi bags, if you're balking
at the price like I did. I joined GG just to buy this
bag, as a matter of
fact.)http://www.miabossi.com/store/index.php?l=product_listgroupid=12135499;groupcategory=111;groupcategory=115;sz=728x90;fmzid=4524;dcove=r;ord=1319620487?"
