 Symbio presentsEncouraging Developmentally Useful
PlayParents know that children learn through play but
how does this happen? What are they learning, what are
the lessons of each age and period in development, and
what is the role of play in this process? Is there such
a thing as the wrong kind of play and can too much, or
too little play ever have a negative impact? We'll
tackle these questions as well as common concerns
involving sharing, discipline and possession that often
come up in discussions of play habits and
 practices.Presented by SymbioNoelle Cochran, PSYDNoelle

developmental specialist and an infant and toddler
sleep specialist. She has been consulting with parents
across the country on issues related to sleep,
development, and discipline in the early years of
parenthood for the past ten years. She completed her
pre and post-doctoral fellowships at the Infant-Parent
Program, UCSF Department of Psychiatry, San Francisco
General Hospital, where she worked with parents and
babies who were having difficulty establishing strong
relational bonds. Her graduate research was done on the
transition to parenthood for couples with twins, and
infant and toddler sleep issues.Lele Diamond, MFTLele

Topic: Child Proofing Tips??

 Hi,

We are wondering if anyone can share advice about
 childproofing? Our neighbor...

I think it really depends on the type of space you
have, how much fancy decor and how extensive you want
to childproof your home. We live in a somewhat modern
single level condo and somewhat minimalist, so we
didn't have to worry about fireplaces and stairs, or
antique urns, etc. I did the childproofing - most of
the gates were pressure mounted so were easy to
install, used sliding cabinet locks, and simple
electrical outlets cover. Hardly required a
screwdriver for all the jobs. We didn't want to drill
holes into our metal door jam or aluminum window
mullions, so the pressure mounted gates worked fine for
us. Got all the gates and other stuff from from Amazon
/ Diapers.com with free shipping. Most important thing
is to make sure you measure the door width correctly
and ordering the right gate to go with it. Kidco is a
much better quality in general. From gates to simple
cabinet sliding locks. My neighbor used the
Childproofer and while he did an extensive and thorough
job, IMHO it was edging on the paranoid side. Books on
the shelf were tied down, cushion bumpers on all dining
chairs edges, and on the windows mullions, and gates
everywhere that made their place looked like a big
 cushiony playpen.

Wanted to add - Tge Childproofer didn't recommend
anything extensive to us. In fact - we requested most
of the things that he put on. He just gave us
recommendations during the original walkthrough and
then sent us a spreadsheet and we picked only what we
wanted. So none of the things that were installed in
someone's home mentioned above were even offered.

We had The Childproofer come to our home for the
assessment. It turns out our place is pretty
straightforward. So, we just used (some of) his
recommendations, bought the supplies, gates, etc.
ourselves (incl. some used items), and then hired our
normal handyman (who also happens to be a dad of twins)
to install one of wall-mounted gates )

I second the backpack diaper bag. We use the Okkatots
bag which has a lot of useful compartments and you can
hang it on your stroller when you don't want to wear
 it.http://www.okkatots.com/traveldiaperbag.htmThere are
tons of other pockets for organization. The best parts
are the insulated pocket on one side for milk/baby food
 and the diaper dispenser.
