1. What type of water for formula?
--------------------------------------------------------
kaluzoo - 4/4/2012 8:03 pm

The last post on this that I could find was over a year
ago and seemed inconclusive, so starting a new one to
see if anyone has updated advice.I cannot breastfeed
(mastectomies) so will be using primarily formula for
our twins, due in a few days (a gracious friend has
donated some breast milk).I have read that SF water may
have too much fluoride to be safely used for formula,
but my pediatrician does not seem to have an
opinion.Thoughts? Advice? What did you do?

Hi Laura - we are members at the Academy, and I've
definitely gotten my money's worth. Our boys are only
10 months, so we usually go for an hour at a time, and
have been at least 10 times. I like the academy, and
the toddler room is great, but I don't know anything
about the little naturalists program (although if it's
anything like the rest of the academy, it should be
 good ;-).

Yes! Max & Kennedy are in #15 in the santa hats and
#36!My dirty secret (that our old nanny figured out) is
that it's ridiculously easy to get your twins pic up on
the "living" page of the SF gate. Just scroll down to
the twins photo box on the left and submit. Takes
about a day then you're up there. That must be where
 she took these from.

Mine are #40. I actually submitted that picture a
couple of years ago for another twins article and they
just reused the old pics they had in their archives. It
was funny to see the picture since my girls are now 3!

We have that same Summer Infant one (well, the older
version). It is worth twice its weight in gold. I've
seen the new one with its zoom/pan/tilt cameras and
touchscreen monitor, and I WANT IT (and my kids are 2
and a half, we're definitely not in the market for a
new monitor). I think it is especially useful to have a
video monitor for twins. When they are little, one can
often sleep through the other's wakings, but you're
still mindful of bothering the sleeping one. It's nice
to be able to peek at them and see what the issue is
(really crying, got arm out of swaddle, needs pacifier,
just a little fussy but likely to settle down, etc) so
you can decide whether you are going in or not. And I
guarantee you will prefer watching your babies on the
monitor to watching television. We are still
absolutely dependent on ours, so I think you can
consider it a long-term investment. (We plan to
continue spying on them until they reach the age where
it is just creepy, or maybe even illegal)The ONLY
negative thing I can say is that it is often staticky.
There are two channels (maybe even more on the new
fancy one), one for each camera, and we always have one
channel that makes a lot of noise. It is a fine art
figuring out how loud you need to have it on to make
sure you hear babies at night, but still have it quiet
enough that the static doesn't bother you. Usually one
channel is semi-quiet, and I leave it turned to that
one at night (since both cameras are in the same room,
I can hear both kids either way, then just switch the
camera view if necessary)I know a twin mom who really
wanted the Motorola one, but then discovered it was
next to impossible to get an extra camera. My mom and I
just gave her this monitor and extra camera, and the
extra was easy to find. Also, I hear the touch screen
motorola one is more difficult that Summer Infant, and
that you have to turn the screen on and use the touch
screen menu to turn the screen on (it's nice to have it
dark when you are sleeping), whereas the Summer Infant
one has a button on the side that makes it easy.

I can only speak to the birth doula question - and we
found that same event at Natural Resources to be really
helpful. They also have a binder full of listings for
additional doula available. We figured out what the
most important things were for us and put it into an
email ad & sent that to a bunch of people, then did
phone interview with the top 5 contenders, I think,
which lead to 3 in-person interviews. And, you have to
ask about backups/scheduling right at the outset - and
meet them, too, if it's all all likely you'll need to
use them, just to be sure everyone's a good fit. Many
doulas like to meet with your a couple of times
before/after the actual birth to help with the larger
process. Virtually all of the doulas we met had people
they liked to cover for them in case one of their mamas
went into labor at some unexpected time when they
weren't available, and I seem to recall most being
pretty good about limiting how many births/month they
would schedule. All that said -- we took a Bradley birth
prep class, and it prepared us so well, that we pretty
much no longer needed our doula, but it was too late to
cancel (-)All the best!! You're in for a fun
 ride!!Lucia
