City Raises Flag in Celebration of Olympic Games; Public Viewing Parties Announced

On Tuesday, July 31, former mayor Willie Brown and Chief of Mayor's Protocol Office
Charlotte Shutlz hosted a ceremony with Rec and Park on the steps of City Hall to
raise the American flag in honor of the Summer Olympics and announce Rec and Park's
upcoming Olympic viewing parties at Civic Center Plaza on August 7 and 11.

Three U.S. Olympians from past Olympics were on hand to help celebrate. Marilyn 
King (pentathlon 1972 and '76), Ted Murphy (rowing 1996 and 2000), and Sean Nolan
(water polo 2000) spoke with a group of kids from city camps about their experience
as Olympians.  In addition, British Consul General Priya Guha and Bay Area Sports
Organizing Committee (BASOC) Board member George Broder were present to make remarks.

The viewing party events on August 7 and 11 will include gourmet food options, Olympic-related
activities, and the energy of a live crowd. Event sponsors include NBC Bay Area,
 Visa, and Coca Cola.

No Small Task: Rec and Park Girls Complete Munchkin Run

On Sunday, July 29, 12 girls from the Tasters Choice Girls in Sports Track & Field
Summer Camp, ages 5-14, participated in the San Francisco Marathon's Munchkin Run.
 All of the girls ran the 100-Yard Dash, while eight ran the mile. Congratulations
to: Sachi Brulane, Joely Cherniss, Stella Cherniss, Noelle Davis, Sonia Davis, Cassandra
Garcia, Katrina Garcia, Daijanae Gebre, Noor Harwell, Jackie Holman, Clara Kwon 
and Natalia Marshall.

Volunteer Weekend at the Oak Woodlands, August 3-5

Join V-O-Cal, San Francisco Recreation and Parks' Natural Areas Program, REI, and
Friends of the Oak Woodlands for a special weekend in August. Build brand new trails
through the Oak Woodlands in Golden Gate Park. The new trails will help reactivate
the Oak Woodlands, making them safer and more inviting for park users.

MEALS + MUSIC + HORSESHOES + CAMPING + VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Join us for one day or the whole weekend: Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.;

Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Camping (optional) on Friday and/or Saturday nights.
