Back to School in Style: Free Backpack Giveaway at Garfield Square on August 25

Get back to school with a fully-supplied backpack, courtesy of Mayor Ed Lee, Mission
Promise Neighborhood, MEDA, Target, Recology, United Way of the Bay Area, and SF
 Rec and Park, Saturday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Garfield Square (Treat
Ave. and 26th St.).  This event includes a resource fair and workshop for parents,
BBQ and entertainment.

New Life at Balboa Park

After a $3.5 million renovation at one of San Francisco's busiest parks, neighbors
and park users are rejoicing.  Balboa Park, one of three parks in the city that 
the Trust for Public Land is helping to overhaul, is a popular community hub for
 residents, soccer players, families, students and baseball players alike.  The 
renovation, which was also funded in part by the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood
Parks Bond, includes a new school-age play area, renovated tennis courts, new picnic
areas, improved landscaping and pathways, safety improvements along Sgt. Young Drive,
community art, and a new skate park, which is set to open in about a month.  On 
August 18, Supervisors John Avalos, Sean Elsbernd and Scott Wiener joined Rec and
Park Commissioner Allan Low to help cut the ribbon on the new park. For more photos

Get Out and Play at Sunday Streets This Sunday, August 26

Sunday Streets returns to Chinatown on Sunday, August 26 for the 2nd Annual Chinatown
Sunday Streets and Ping Pong Tournament!  Join thousands of Bay Area residents, 
families and visitors by walking, riding (bikes are allowed this year) or rolling
along a car-free roadway! The open streets take place on Grant Avenue from the Chinatown
Gates (at Bush St.), to Broadway, and continues on Jackson from Grant to Battery,
Battery from Jackson to Washington, and Washington from Battery to the Embarcadero.
 Sunday Streets hours are 11 am to 4 pm.
The 2nd Annual Chinatown Ping Pong Tournament will take place at Portsmouth Square
just before Sunday Streets, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Come watch teams compete or
play a game during open play from 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.

Academy of Art and SF State Kick Off at Kezar on September 5
