2. Can I pump *before* I feed my babies in the morning?
--------------------------------------------------------
jeccat - 12/4/2012 7:56 am

Hi all-- my twins recently started sleeping through the
night-- yay! What this means in practice is that I wake
up overly full and leaking (though not uncomfortably
engorged), and the babies tend to choke a little during
the BF session. I have been pumping immediately after I
feed them and getting a good 7-8 ounces, which I would
like to maintain to ensure I won't run short when I
return to work and start pumping instead of BF 3x per
day. However, it would work better for my morning
schedule if I could pump, shower, dress, and put on
makeup BEFORE waking the babies. Do any of you pump in
the am before feeding your babies? Do they seem like
they get enough? Will this cause any foremilk /
hindmilk balance issues? If I do this, should I cap the
pumping at 8 oz (which I suspect will take about 5
minutes at the pump)? Any other advice? Thanks!

I pumped in the morning when I woke up -- just a few
ounces, though. Then I showered, did hair and makeup,
dressed, and then nursed my babies. I needed it for
comfort, it was nice to have a few extra ounces for
bottles, and the babies never seemed to notice the
difference between the weekdays (when I pumped before
feeding) and weekend (when I didn't).

I do ask my nanny to cook fresh meals. If your nanny
is not the creative/chef type, I suggest you just give
her a few simple recipes each week and tell her to shop
for the ingredients and then cook them while the babies
 are napping.

Great question - I'm curious about the answers. My
nanny does not cook. She addressed this during the
interview process. She will assemble meals from
ingredients I've left and occasionally do a simple prep
like boiling something when I'm overwhelmed and havent
had time but that's about it. So they do end up eating
some jar/packaged food. One of our twins often only
naps for 45 minutes in the morning so that's the
nanny's time to have her lunch and relax a bit. She
takes them out to activities in the afternoon and their
second nap is usually in the stroller so she can't cook
then. For us, we feltlike it was more important for
them to get out of the house and interact with other
kids every day than to have the nanny prepare food. But
somenights when I'm making food for them at 10pm I
wonder if that was the right call! And in a month or so
when they transition to one longer (hopefully) nap we
 may reevaluate.

When my twins were younger and eating purees, our nanny
made them during naptime. One or two days a week, she'd
make a bunch of food, keep some in the fridge and
freeze the rest. As they got a bit older and were
basically eating chopped versions of our adult food, I
would leave a note or mark food in the fridge, and
she'd chop it as necessary. As they became toddlers,
she "prepared" all their lunches, but it was more like
assembling things on a plate (cheese, fruit, veggies,
hummus for dipping, our leftovers, beans, etc.).

Ditto what everyone else has said in that no plan is
necessary, but I found having one very helpful. I was
pretty upset about having to have a c section and it
helped me to feel I had some control over the
circumstances. We knew at least one of the boys would
be headed to the NICU, so our plan was mostly focused
around making sure we knew where my husband was going,
which baby he was staying with, and how we were all
getting united ASAP (as Carin said, this takes some
real work on someone's part - and that someone cannot
be you as you will be a bit out of it and unable to get
out of bed). Our plan was:- Music to be played in OR-
No morphine or other IV based pain meds for me after
the spinal (all pain meds make me itch). Being clear
about this was key as it meant the dr. used a local
anesthetic that released itself over about 24hours from
a bulb attached to my incision. It was awesome, and I
needed no other meds- Very important that I get to see
both babies before they took them away, and hold them
if possible (I did not think this would be possible,
especially with one NICU bound, but I got to hold both
of them - just placed on my chest - before they left
and it was *amazing*)- I could not breast feed due to
an adventure with breast cancer, but it was *very*
important to me that no one else feed the babies - I
wanted to do their first feedings if at all possible.
This was so incredible, and really helped with the ASAP
reunion as the nurses had to bring them to me or me to
them :)The bottom line is I ended up with a very
positive experience, despite being pretty bummed out
about a birth about as far from natural as you can get
(my original plan when I thought we were having one
baby involved a home birth - ha!). It is true that all
that matters in the end is healthy babies and a healthy
mama, but part of healthy mama is an emotionally
positive experience, and I found having some plan laid
out helped me on that path. Feel free to email me if
you'd like more details (I delivered at Stanford).I
hope you have a wonderful birth.Sarah

Happy to report that the separation was a success for
all! I had such a nice bonding time with one of my
daughters (who also got the chance to meet her baby
cousin and spend time with Aunt, Uncle + Big cuz) and
my other daughter had awesome bonding time with Nana
and Papa here at home. I feel like I got to know her
better, having time to really focus on her and not be
forced to divide my attention the entire time. I also
think she even feels closer to me after our brief time
away together and I know both girls really seemed to
enjoy being in the "spotlight" for a few days with
space/toys/attention all to themselves. It was quite
relaxing and made me appreciate our jobs as multiples
parents so much more after really experiencing how the
"singleton" world lives. My plan is to do a swaparoo
and trade babes for my next weekend trip to visit my
best friend and her new baby girl. Today was such a
happy reunion day for us all! It was so special to see
how much my girls really love each other - they kissed
each other goodnight before bed tonight. (for anyone
who is able to do even short periods of 1:1 time with
each babe, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! My hubby and I have
rotated doing short outings with one baby each before
this big trip and everyone seems to get so much out of
it. Since we hope to do this for many years to come,
we wanted to put systems in place now so it's normal
for all of us and easier as they get older)

Maxi dresses from old navy were the only thing that fit
me in the end. They were comfy and doubled as excellent
nursing-wear because you can detach the straps and just
 flip the whole top down!
