1. Questions about nanny search
--------------------------------------------------------
pfordyce - 12/7/2012 10:49 am

We are about to start a nanny search for our 2.5 month
old twin girls - we're looking for child care starting
in February. I'm a bit overwhelmed at the prospect,
and was hoping that some folks on here might be able to
answer a few questions I might have...(1) How much
should we expect to pay? It seems like $22 is the
standard rate for a share care, which would apply for
twins? Is that right?(2) Has anyone with twins ever
been able to share a nanny with another family to
reduce the cost? Or is that too many kids for 1
nanny?(3) We are thinking of maybe going only 3
days/week to reduce the cost. Is it significantly more
difficult to find a part-time nanny for 3 days per
week?(4) Does anyone have any overall tips for us in
navigating this process? Thanks in advance for any
advice you can give! I'm posting this to both the
caregiver search forum and the general discussion forum
 - this is my first time posting, so please let me know
 if that's bad manners :)

At 2.5 months, adding additional kids for a nanny share
to save money is too much work, and the care for your
little ones will suffer. The nanny will have plenty to
do in her "down" time, like babies' dishes, laundry.
3-days a week makes it harder, but not impossible.I
highly recommend using Care.com. You can get a
subscription for about $20/month (remember to
discontinue it when you're done or it will keep
charging your card) You can post an ad, receive
applications, and sort through them starting with
shortest commute until you narrow the list to 3-4
people you want to meet. Often times they have
background checks, references, and reviews posted to
their profiles. We've used this to find both of our
nannies and all 5 of our babysitters. Good luck!

Yes, that rate applies for twins. I have seen the
going rate for a twins nanny to be between $22 and
$25/hr. With outliers going up to $30/hr.

And you have to think over vs under the table and if
there is any Overtime at 1.5x. It may not be 3 days a
week forever. Also, think about the future (I forgot
about this part when interviewing). For instance, will
she make them food (not just purees, but *real*
food/meals when they are older). Will she do all the
cleanup? Will she do any housework for you beyond the
children's laundry or whatever (i.e your laundry) How
does she feel about if you are late? (I am late EVERY
DAY--sometimes upwards of 90 minutes-- and the fact
that I don't have to worry about my nanny being pissed
at me is PRICELESS. It means I don't have to stress
about getting home and can focus at work). What types of
activities will she take them on at 6 mo, 12 mo, 2 yrs,
etc.? i.e. will she take them to music class or the
park or the Academy? Does she need to drive? How will
you get her on your insurance?I used sittercity and
were very happy with the candidates from there.

Hi all,I'm looking for a support group or good contacts
for single moms of twins. I have two, 2 year old boys
and I'm desperate for making contacts with others in a
similar situation to talk to about life, coping, and
support. Anyone heard of such a thing?
