1. When both babies cry.....
--------------------------------------------------------
robynroberts1128 - 12/11/2012 3:56 pm

What advice can anyone give about how to soothe the
twins when they are both crying at the same time. My
twins are 10 weeks old - my husband is back at work.
Besides feeding, changing diapers (the obvious), what's
the best way to soothe two crying babies? I have a hard
time lifting both at the same time. My only solution
(when they've eaten, have clean diapers, etc) is to
swaddle them and put them in the swing. I feel bad
doing this all the time but they totally calm down and
usually fall right asleep. I'm feeling guilty
 though.....any suggestions????Thanks so much!

the swing, guilt free! I could not hold them both at
the same time either. It was like Sophie's Choice
every day! Which crying baby are you going to pick up?
Are you showing favorites? (Ok, now I am showing my
age!)I used to say twin moms have to do CIO bcs we live
it each day! There is no way to soothe both in a way
that a mom of a singleton would be satisfied with. It
is OK--Your babies will survive. No one died from
crying a bit. You are a good mom! Breathe!

Thank you! That makes me feel so much better! It's so
overwhelming when I'm on my own!

I agree, try not to feel bad! It's totally normal in
our situation. Mine are 12 weeks old, but were born at
 34 weeks. I still feel a little guilty that I don't
hold them all the time, but that would make me go
insane (or more crazy than I already am, haha). I
usually just let one cry, until I can calm the other
one down. For me it's especially when I have to go
upstairs to pump and one of my babies always ends up
crying when I'm up there. I come down and put the paci
back in her mouth (it's always her, not my boy), but in
the end I realize that I need to learn to be OK with
letting them cry. I also just putting them both down -
one in a swing and one in a lullaby rocker and hope
 they both calm down quickly!

One tip that still works for me at age 3 is that if one
is in full-blown meltdown mode, but the other one is
crying considerably less (or just starting to melt
down), try soothing the calmer baby first. If you can
avoid two meltdowns at once, that's always best. Then
with one soothed baby, you can turn your attention to
the baby that needs it most.

6. Advice about carrier packs for hiking

MamaWobin - 12/11/2012 10:33 am

Our twins just turned 1 and I finally feel up for
getting back into hiking! Is it too late at this point
to use those hiking carrier packs? Anyone have advice
on which ones are best? My husband is tall - 6'3" and
I'm 5'10". Our twins are pretty tall as well-I'm not
sure exactly how many inches right now they'll get
measured this week at their checkup but usually are in
the 75% for height, 50% for weight. I have gotten
pretty out of shape in the last year so would love any
other advice about hiking with 1-yr old twins that
might make it easier too - thanks!

My kids are 2 months shy of their 3rd birthday and we
still use backpacking carriers! (They are 29lbs and
32lbs) We backpack, snow shoe and most often we use
them grocery shopping (If I have both kids, one sits in
the cart and the other is in the backpack.)I can tell
we're nearing the end of the dream, but so far it's
still working. As far as which ones are best, we had
four of them (long story as to why...) one was a very
old hand me down that worked just fine, one was a Kelty
Kids TC 2.1 Transit Child Carrier Backpack that is
horribly uncomfortable but has the capacity to carry a
ton of stuff in the pockets so great if you're going on
a big picnic, one was a Kelty Kids Tour which we
bought on craigslist which worked fine and was my
favorite, and the last was my husband's favorite: Kelty
FC 3.0, expensive, but found new on eBay for far less
than REI sells it for. If you're going to use these a
lot like we have, it's an excellent investment. If you
want to just use them now and then, or you're not sure
about how much then I recommend Craigslist. These stay
sturdy and really retain their value, so purchasing
used is a fine option. Have fun!

hi! for starters on short hikes, ergos on your backs
are perfect - just to get going. particularly if it's
chilly out. your body heat makes a big difference.
or, if the kids are sleepy, they like snuggling there.
we use our keltys almost every weekend. the girls are
super alert in them and love being perched up so high.
the kelty fc 3.0 has taller leg space for the kids.
the kelty fc1 has shorter leg space, but is lighter to
wear (fewer pockets for gear). i'm 5'8"; our kids are
60th/75th percentile for height. i think the kelty fc1
is a little too short on leg space. i bet we'll
upgrade that one soon. i love the sun/screen top
covers that clasp on to the keltys - it's a great
feature. i agree with the other post, you can buy
these used, they're well made, rugged. also, to note,
the girls get chilly sitting up high in the keltys in
the windy bay area, so i always put extra long pants on
them, to really come down over their feet/socks (i
usually don't put shoes on them in the keltys because
the angle at which their feet hang just looks
uncomfortable to me), we have some thick socks for the
girls; and we have a little 24 month north face
windbreaker jackets that i put on them with the hoods
up. the sleeves are a little long, but they'll grow
into them fast! and the extra room in the torso is good
for an extra sweater now.there's also a neat book you
might like that i found recently: 'babes in the woods:
hiking/camping/boating with babies and young children'
by jennifer aist. our girls will be 17 months this
weekend. love getting out with them. i feel strong
and healthy lugging them around in the woods. just
used our kelty packs on the rock spring trail from
mountain theater to west point inn on mt. tam two
weekends ago. felt great! gorgeous views of the bay.
also, we're thinking about heading up to bodega bay
(doran beach) to start camping soon with the girls! we
were up there playing on the beach last weekend. was
great.another great day trip with the kids in the
keltys is hiking out on angel island. and, there's a
 fantastic twin-mom-approved playground on community
road in belvedere as a stopping point to let the kids
romp. hiking down to the nature friends biergarten is a
sweet spot too (if you like german beer). if you have
other questions, i'm happy to chat anytime! it's such
an exciting time! yay! best, jen

9. Perinatal Therapy

I wanted to provide this great resource to the group.
Camilla Behnke is a Marriage and Family therapist who
specializes in Perinatal Therapy. Please feel free to
contact her or to pass her information along to anyone
who may need this service. Check out her website
at:http://camillabehnke.com/The birth of a child means
the birth of a parent. If you are thinking about
having a baby, feeling overwhelmed in your pregnancy,
or you have a new baby at home, you probably understand
that the pre and post-natal process is very stressful.
What is often left out of the parenting classes or
books is that this time in our lives can be a very
confusing and emotionally taxing experience. Taking the
time to address your emotions around this transition
has proven to help families manage expectations, reduce
anxiety and have an overall more satisfying perinatal
 experience.Camilla Behnke:

alex zaphiris' practice does house calls, i believe.
 http://www.alexzaphiris.com/i ended up choosing another
practice that does not do house calls (golden gate
pediatrics), but i attended a vaccine lecture with alex
zaphiris, and liked what i heard. best, jen
