Dear Park Champion,

On behalf of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, thanks for all you
do to support our City's beloved parks and recreation facilities.  It's been a great
year for parks.  San Francisco voters overwhelmingly supported the Clean and Safe
Neighborhood Parks Bond and the Trust for Public Land named San Francisco the Number
One urban park system in America.  Our successes reflect the collective work of 
our staff, our elected officials, volunteers, community organizations and individuals
who all see the value in having a world-class park system and who have played a 
role in supporting our efforts throughout the past year.

We invite you to view our report to the community for Fiscal Year 2011-12, which
 provides an overview of the great work our department has been doing during the

It's Official! The Holiday Season is Here

More than 500 people came out to McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park on  December 
6 to celebrate the Recreation and Park Department's 83rd Annual  Holiday Tree Lighting,
an event begun by longtime park superintendent  "Uncle" John McLaren, who would 
light a mile-long stretch of trees on  Fell Street, ending in front of 501 Stanyan
Street, his home at the  time.  Revelers enjoyed free carnival games, arts and crafts,
live  entertainment and a visit from Santa.  Mayor Ed Lee and former Mayor Willie
Brown, along with several  other city officials, were on hand to lead the countdown
to the tree  lighting.

Teens, Looking for a Job During the Summer and School Year?

Entering its 54th year, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Workreation
Program is a school-year and summer employment, mentorship and training program 
for all youth who live in, or attend school in, San Francisco.  Workreation is open
to youth, ages 14-17 (or 18, as long as the student is still in high school).

Applications for Summer 2013 will be accepted from December 19, 2012, through January
18, 2013.

 Interviews will take place mid-to-late February 2013.  Summer programming begins
in June and ends in mid-August.
A job application workshop will take place on Friday, January 4, 2013, at 10 a.m.,
at Tenderloin Recreation Center, located at 570 Ellis Street, near Hyde Street.

Breaking Ground at Peru Playground on December 15

Join us for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of a renovation project
at Peru Playground in McLaren Park, Saturday, December 15, at 10:30 a.m.  This is
a project under the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond's Community Opportunity
Fund, which allows community members to apply for funding for smaller capital projects
at their neighborhood parks. On December 15, connect with neighbors, learn about
 the project and enjoy holiday music.

Signups for 2013 SF Youth Baseball League Going on Now!

The 2013 season of the San Francisco Youth Baseball League is right  around the 
corner in March 2013.  Registration begins December 6, at 10  a.m.  Fees are $80
 per player, which includes coaching, uniforms,  practice and games.  Multiple divisions
