Take a Long Walk Down the New Pier 43 Promenade

Mayor Ed Lee, Supervisor David Chiu and a group of city officials, including Port
employees, Rec and Park Commission President Mark Buell, and Rec and Park GM Phil
Ginsburg, cut the ribbon on the new Pier 43 promenade near Fisherman's Wharf on
 December 17.

The new promenade extends The Embarcadero Promenade from Powell Street to Taylor
Street, 880 feet into the heart of Fisherman's Wharf, and features views of the
Bay, the historic Pier 43 Ferry Arch and Alcatraz.

The $10 million renovation project, funded in part by the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood
Parks Bond ($7.5M) included removing the piers and sidewalk back to the seawall,
repairing the seawall, protecting the shoreline, and building a new public promenade
in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf, which enhances the quality of the pedestrian
experience and provides for an open space destination. The Promenade features
tables, chairs and landscaping and views of Alcatraz and the historic rail arch.
The Promenade also closes a gap in the San Francisco Bay Trail.
