Rec and Park is proud to once again come out and celebrate the diversity of our 
city at this year's LGBT Pride Celebration at Civic Center this Saturday and Sunday,
June 23 and 24. Stop by our booth for some RPD swag and find out about our exciting

Volunteer With Pride This Month

If you'd like to volunteer after this year's SF Dyke March on Sunday, June 24, join
Dolores Park Works for trash pickup immediately following the march.

On June 30, join the Gay & Lesbian Sierrans who have been volunteering at Corona
 Heights since 1993. As part of the activity section of the San Francisco Bay Chapter
of the national Sierra Club, meet at the Randall Museum Parking lot at 10 a.m. for

Featured Event: Betty Ann Ong Chinese Recreation Center Reopens July 14

Join  Mayor Edwin M. Lee, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, SF  Recreation
and Parks, the Betty Ann Ong Foundation and the Chinatown  community for a special
event celebrating the reopening of the historic  Chinese Recreation Center in Chinatown.
  After a $21 million renovation  as part of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood
Parks Bond, the center  is set to reopen as the new Betty Ann Ong Chinese Recreation
Center,  named in honor of a San Francisco native and national heroine.
Saturday, July 14, 2012, at 12 Noon.  Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Brief Remarks 
at 12:30 p.m.
Tours of the New Facility + Activities for Kids + Light Refreshments.  Parking is
extremely limited.  Please consider public transportation.

SF Chronicle: Public Darkroom Users Hone Craft in Digital Era

Although photo darkrooms may be going the way of the typewriter and  the videotape,
there are still a few holdouts, like the Harvey Milk  Photo Center near San Francisco's
Duboce Park - the oldest, and largest,  public darkroom west of the Mississippi...
Director Dave Christensen knows of a few other public darkrooms, one  in New York
and one in Boston. But they are dying, and fast... "Every week I find photo orphans
left outside our front door when I  show up in the morning," he said. "Enlargers,
old trays, film spools."

The Stern Grove Festival, entering its 75th season this weekend, has a long and 
illustrious history of providing free summer concerts in San Francisco.  In the 
above photo, which appeared in the Recreation and Park Department's News Bulletin
on June 16, 1952, a throng of concertgoers celebrates the start of another highly
anticipated concert season. Balboa Park Community Mosaic Tile Event This Weekend, July 22-24

Construction at Balboa Park is moving along! Join The Trust for Public Land and 
Rec and Park for an opportunity to go behind the scenes and be a part of building
your park before opening day!

JUNE 22, 23 & 24 (FRI - SUN), 11AM-5PM

We will be setting and grouting tile mosaics for the park with artist Rachel Rodi.
Snacks and drinks will be provided! Adults and children 10 and up are welcome to
 attend. We also need adult volunteers to supervise the children. If you or your
 child would like to participate, you can sign up for the entire time or just for
an hour! Space is limited, so sign up soon.

Sign Up for SF PAL Seahawks Football and Cheer Beginning This Friday, June 22

Sign up now for SF PAL Seahawks Football and Cheer, a San Francisco tradition for
over 50 years serving city youth. PAL Seahawks is part of the AYFL NorCal division
and serves ages 8-15 for football and 5-15 for cheer/dance.

Registration Events @ Hamilton Recreation Center, 1900 Geary Blvd. at Steiner St.:
Friday, June 22, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Friday, July 6, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Practices are at Kimbell Field starting July 30. Season runs from September through

"Be Amazing, Stand Up and Volunteer Day" for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and Recreation

Photo Exhibit Celebrates the City's Parks and Hidden Gems

Harvey  Milk Photography Center invites its members and Recreation and  Park Department
staff to submit work showcasing the large variety of  green spaces our city has 
to offer, from popular destinations such as  Golden Gate Park, Dolores Park, and
 Alamo Square Park, to vast, lesser  known parks, including Glen Canyon Park and
 John McLaren Park, as well  as mini-parks and hidden stairways nestled throughout
town.

People,  pets, sunrises, sunsets, rain, sun, fog, wildlife, vistas, cityscapes, 
 trees, meadows, and macros - we'd like to see it all. Color, black and  white, 
digital and film photography will be accepted. Deadline for  submissions is Saturday,
June 23, at 4 p.m.
