bhavna12 - 6/20/2012 7:14 pm
Hi all - I've had back pain in one spot on my mid-back.
Icing doesn't seem to do much. I used biofreeze today
and that helped for a bit, but I still have it. Any
other remedies that have worked for you?I also have
pain on the left side (sleep on left primarily) in the
buttocks area. Ice helps that area, but open to trying
other things..Thanks!

marckuzak276 - 6/20/2012 12:02 pm
Hi, I posted a few weeks ago - we're moving from the UK
to SF in August, probably to the Noe Valley area. I'm
desperately looking for pre-school places for them,
ideally in the area starting August/September just for
a couple of mornings or afternoons a week. Can anyone
recommend anywhere - or better still - advise of any
spots you know of that are becoming available? A few
people recommended the JCC but this is full booked
until next fall, and also bit of a drive away from Noe.
Any help on this greatly appreciated! Where do your
kids go?

How old are your children? There have been a few
postings recenty of openings at peter's place in the
richmond (far from Noe, but a well-liked school) and
one other that I cannot recall off the top of my head.
Also, if they are younger, I went to the Mount Sutro
School open house the other day and that seemed lovely
and they are taking apps for 18 months-3 (?).

I would recommend Peter's Place. It is in the inner
Richmond, so a bit of a drive from Noe Valley, but it
is a play-based preschool and is really wonderful. I
don't know if your kids are the right age, but they
just happen to have two boy spots for the Mon/Wed/Fri
morning class which is really unprecedented. Usually
they are filled for months/years in advance.Call the

I can't recommend Child's Light Pediatrics enough. Drs.
Martel & Herbsman are wonderful doctors, and so good
with kids. They do primarily house calls for all visits
(sick and well child visits) although they're opening
an office soon, for those who prefer that. I can't tell
you how convenient that has been with two little ones,
not to mention avoiding all the other sick kids in the
waiting room. You have email/text/cell access to a dr
24 hours a day 7 days a week, including holidays.
They're amazing. They're CPMC, not UCSF, but I can't
say enough good things about them.

How long have you tried keeping them in their cribs and
letting them just roll around, 'talk' to each other and
doze off and on? Sometimes that can go on happily for
an hour then finally someone falls asleep.Do they have
blankies or something else that signals that it's time
to sleep for awhile?Blackout curtains? Everyone told us
we had to get them and we never did -- and didn't need
to -- but I think some children need that darkness.Soft
music?I'm guessing you've tried all of this. What about
trying to do no morning nap (and maybe a long stroller
walk so they can have some downtime) and try an earlier
afternoon nap??? 10 months seems early to take away a
nap but maybe that would work. (I'm no expert, that's
for sure, but I figure try anything that will make
everyone happy)One last thing: We had a wonderful
nanny working with us who told us not to mess with
their nap and bedtimes because we will do more harm
than good. She was right. Every time we tried to keep
them up so they would sleep better, it backfired. They
got too tired. I doubt this is much help. Have you
checked the archives? I bet there is a trove of info
around nappinggood luck

We went through this when our babies were younger,
maybe 4-5 months. I finally got tired of it and decided
no one got out of their cribs for good until at least
45 minutes were up. I resorted to walking them
it actually means they'll sleep less, rather than more.
A good sleep book you might want to read is The Sleep
Lady's Good Night, Sleep Tight. I refer to it all the
time. http://www.sleeplady.com/books/

Along the lines of Cat, above, we went through this
when our kids were younger. The advice we got was to
leave them in the crib for longer, so they learn that
the nap isn't over, and they should go back to sleep. A
consultant told us that a sleep cycle can be about 30
minutes, so they are waking up naturally, but rather
than rolling over and going back to sleep, they're
AWAKE. But with such short naps, they get tired again
quickly (and at least in my case, get pretty grumpy). So
when they first wake up, you can either leave them in
the crib and let them cry or play, until they go back
to sleep on their own, or go hold them and rock them to
try to get them back to sleep. Same as Cat, it was hard
for us at first, and the kids wanted out, but after a
week or two they started to get the idea that they were
supposed to sleep longer, and either they just didn't
wake up after 30 minutes, or they were able to get
themselves back to sleep without a fuss.We transitioned
to two naps around 7-8 months (~6 adjusted), but it was
a fairly natural transition - once they slept longer,
they could be awake longer, so they didn't need to nap
as often, so they ended up just needing 2 naps. I'm
pretty sure the archives have some sample schedules for
different ages, which include info on nap times and
spacings and all that.Good luck!

It's SO frustrating, isn't it? You might want to read
the Marc Weissbluth sleep book for overall philosophy -
particularly that "sleep begets sleep" - which seemed
really counter-intuitive when we first learned about
it, but then saw first hand how true it is. Getting
there can be tricky -- and don't kill yourself with the
charting Weissbluth suggests (that literally drove me
to tears) - but do try the leaving them in crib as the
posters above suggested. I've read that sleep cycles
tend to be 30-45 minutes, and often they'll wake after
one for a time, but can then go back to sleep (if they
have the opportunity.) I know it made a real
difference to us, when we figured out that they HAD to
sleep, at least a little, between each feeding, to stay
on a much more even keel overall. I can't remember
their exact age, then, tho, or how it might be adjusted
for preemies. It was a bit later that their many
short naps consolidated into fewer, longer ones and
then got more regular. Also, the more they eat, the
longer they can go between feeedings, so that's another
thing you just have to wait out a bit -- I don't know
how big your kids are, but there's a definitely
physiological component there, too.If you get really
desperate, the gals at Symbio are pretty great:

Habits, Happy Twins"http://www.drweissbluth.com/Good
luck to you!

I dug up our schedule from a few months back. It is
similar to the above post. We did this for many months
and it worked well:6:30 am -- up, full sippy cups of
milk in nursery (this buys you some time, allows you to
get diapers changed, cribs in order, etc.), breakfast
in kitchen, then activity8:30/9:00 am -- nap
10:00 am -- wake, water and snack,
activity (ideally outside) 12:00 pm -- lunch then
light play (some time to digest/wind down for nap)
12:45/1 pm -- nap3:00 pm -- wake, milk and snack,
then activity 5:00 pm -- dinner5:30 pm -- bath, full
sippy cups of milk in nursery around 6:00pm (to fill
their bellies before a long night of sleep),
stories/whatever you like to do to wind down6:30 pm ---
lights offI hope this helsp.

depending on the day.- wake up and eat again around 10.
(solids and milk)- playtime.- naptime again about an
hour and a half after you ate. sleep 45 min - 2 hours.-
eat again around 1-2 (solids and milk)- playtime.- last
(3rd) nap of the day.- eat 3-4 pm (solids and milk)-
play until bedtime. last bottle.- you sleep 12-13
hours.

Know this: breast feeding gets easier with time. Hang
in there. Over the next days and weeks the babies will
get stronger, you'll have a better understanding of how
to best position them, and the babies will suck
better. In those early days we had a similar schedule.
We got through it with a night doula on some nights and
family help on the nights that the doula was not here.
During the day, I would feed one boy by breast and then
pump, and the family member would feed the other one by
syringe/bottle, and then we'd switch at the next feed.
Over time I fed them each individually by breast. At
night I would pump at at the 1-2 a.m. feed and go back
to sleep, while the family member or doula fed/changed
the boys. Yes, nipple shields were really helpful. For
my son with a poor latch and a "chompy" suck, the
shields were critical for a month or two.Take one feed
cycle at a time, take it one day at a time. Re:
lactation consultants: it is great that you have one
coming to the house. If you're feeling overwhelmed and
really at your limit, tell her. She should be able
give you recommendations that make things a little
easier. I, too, had a lactation consultant coming to
the house for 30? hours and I visited the "free" one
available through Kaiser a few times. In the end, it
was really helpful to have these two resources -- we
were able to triangulate our own path between them.
Take advantage of whatever resources you have available
to you. Also, once you're ready to get out of the
house, I found it helpful to visit the lactation
support circle at Natural Resources (or Day One); yes,
it was mostly singleton moms there, but I found it
really encouraging, and was a "good challenge for the
day" to make it there. Finally, re: tandem
breastfeeding. I agree that this is a real time saver.
However, it just wasn't possible for us to do in those
early days. We retried it at 6 weeks, and it worked -
the boys were stronger, M's latch was better, and I had
a better idea of how to position them (rolled up baby
blankets as props). If you and your babies can do
tandem feeding now, GREAT. But if not, try again in a
week or so, and keep trying. Hang in there. It should
get easier. We made it through, and you will too.

Hi all!Thank you so much for all your recommendations,
pieces of advice and sharing your own stories. I will
try to keep everything in mind going forward, but it is
still all quite overwhelming.I would like to tandem
nurse, but baby A is so impatience and fussy - she
cannot seem to get her milk quick enough. That makes it
hard positioning her and, of course, trying to position
baby b at the same time. Also, baby a does a lot of
thrusting with her tongue, which makes it additionally
hard. :(Our family is in Europe, unfortunately, but we
have some help each Mon, Tue and Wed. One last
questions regarding the schedule and both babies being
in sync: How did you manage to have both babies on the
same schedule? For the past 4 days, both are so off
schedule. Baby B wants to eat every hour or two and
baby A has so much pain in her tummy that, the evening/
night feeds especially, are a disaster. They are
therefore all over the place being hungry and I could
feed anyone of them at any given time it seems.Did all
of you just stay at home for 3 months and not do
anything else but feed and nurse? That is what it looks
like for me if I do not change anyting or make real
fast progress. Please let me know. Thanks again for all
your kind words.

Congratulations to you on your twins!! And I feel
your pain! Breastfeeding was so much harder than I
expected... definitely at first. However -- it sounds
like you're on the right track. Do what you can to get
the tandem feeds going - that will make a HUGE
difference. Even carving out a few extra minutes where
you're not strapped into a much of pillows on your bed
or sofa will be amazing. Whenever one was hungry, we
just got the other on, too, and they eventually caught
on. That said -- it IS a steep learning curve for all
concerned, so know that being patient helps, and
believing that it WILL pay off eventually hopefully
does too... and drinking lots of water, and keeping
your strength up as much as you can, makes a huge
difference. That's great that you're getting help -
and you might also find folks thru the La Leche League
that might be able to provide additional insights or
advice (altho with 2, I never was up to attend the
actual meetings - but they were a good resource by
phone.)Lastly, since I think you're a newer member, you
can find an article (written by a specialist) in the
July/August 2011 issue of our newsletter, that might
contain some useful info. Just click on the "files"
tab above, and scroll thru to find that issue, and
click to download for viewing - just takes a few
seconds. I think it's on the second screen listing all
the documents available there.GOOD LUCK - hang in
there!! It sometimes takes time but it'll be SO worth
it, once everything comes together!

I would do what you can to get them on the same
schedule. Try to get the one that wants to eat every
hour to wait at least 2 hours... Rock, cuddle,
whatever. Then he/she will eat more next feeding and be
able to go a little longer before the next. Always
wake up the other baby. You could try getting both
babies on the tandem pillow to be near you, even if you
are only actively feeding one. Then you could try
switching off between them. Not sure if that would work
or just make them more frustrated...Do anything you can
to make pumping life easier. Get multiple sets of
parts, store them in the refrigerator between pumpings
for the day, wash in the dishwasher if you have one or
use the microwave bags. Not cleaning parts after every
single feeding should help save time.Hang in there, it
does get easier as they get bigger and are stronger.
But at the end of the day, do whatever keeps you sane,
and if that means some formula, so be it... You are a
wonderful mom and the most important thing is that you
love them.

I started my kids on probiotics immediately after the
vomiting stopped, and it really helped keep the
diarrhea more in check and I think they rebounded
better than the other kids that were in our little
circle of epidemic. That and hydrating with popsicles
helped a lot during the vomiting stage. Best of luck
