2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Introduced
Mayor Ed Lee officially introduced the proposed 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood
Parks Bond Measure at the Board of Supervisors on May 15. The $195 million bond
measure intended for the November ballot is co-sponsored by Board President David
Chiu and Supervisors Eric Mar, Mark Farrell, Carmen Chu, Christina Olague, Jane
Kim, Sean Elsbernd, Scott Wiener, David Campos and Malia Cohen.
The 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond would help address the more than
$1 billion in capital needs faced by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.
Dilapidated playgrounds, worn playfields and deteriorating swimming pools show signs
of excessive wear and tear due to a lifetime of use, while inefficient and wasteful
irrigation systems, urban forestry emergencies and outdated playgrounds stretch
already thin resources and exacerbate existing maintenance challenges.
The bond includes $99 million in funding for specific neighborhood parks, as well
as long awaited investment in larger, citywide parks-- $9 million for Golden Gate
Park, $10 million for John McLaren Park and $2 million for Lake Merced. Playground
safety projects would receive $15.5 million.
In addition, the bond would address forestry, trail and water conservation needs,
and provide $12 million for the continuation of the Community Opportunity Fund,
a capital grants program that allows residents, neighborhood groups and park advocates
to initiate small repairs and improvements in their parks by matching public grants
with other private funding.
San Francisco Port waterfont projects, including a new public plaza at Pier 43 and
a new 2.7-acre park at the Northeast Wharf Plaza, would receive $34.5 million.
The 2012 bond would follow the successful 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks
Bond, which was approved by 71.6% of San Francisco voters. The 2008 Parks bond
renovated 13 neighborhood parks and 11 waterfront properties, and implemented five
citywide programs.

Help Get Timmy to the Library
In partnership with the United Way/Bay Area and the SF Public Library, SF Recreation
and Parks has entered a contest to have Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum chip in for
a San Francisco cause, in this case, the library!
What could get kids more excited about reading than Tim and his dog, Cy, driving
a Bookmobile into a reading fair and kick-starting a read-a-thon? Teaming up with
SF Public Library, SF Recreation and Parks and United Way volunteers, Tim can promote
the importance of early literacy. The reading fair will take place in the Western
Addition. Volunteers will sign kids up for library cards and the citywide summer
read-a-thon, give away books, and support the importance of reading. Tim and Cy
will arrive in style in the Bookmobile, creating a memory that kids will never
forget!
