Golden Gate Park's Middle Drive East Renamed in Honor of Leader Nancy Pelosi
On May 21, Mayor Edwin M. Lee participated in a ceremonial renaming of Middle Drive
East in Golden Gate Park in honor of Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to celebrate
her 25 years of public service to our City and its residents. Leader Pelosi represents
California's 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, which
includes most of San Francisco including Golden Gate Park, Bayview to Bernal Heights,
Chinatown to the Castro, the Mission to the Marina, and North Beach to Noe Valley.
In her 25 years of service, Leader Pelosi has transformed San Francisco by preserving
public lands and parks, expanding transit, protecting the Bay and the environment
and ensuring affordable housing.

Meet the Recreation and Park Commission's Newest Member, Allan E. Low
On Wednesday, May 16, Mayor Ed Lee appointed Allan E. Low to the seven-member Recreation
and Park Commission. Commissioner Low is a partner in Nixon Peabody LLP's Real
Estate Practice Group. His broad range of experience includes real estate transactions,
real estate finance, and development projects. He represents financial institutions
and lenders in connection with loan originations, loan modifications, loan workouts,
troubled debt restructuring, forbearance agreements, receiverships, and deed in
lieu transactions.
"As a kid, Christopher Playground and Glen Park Canyon were my home parks. I was
lucky to have access to both parks and to grow up with youth programs and recreational
activities where I learned to ride a bike and played baseball, basketball and football.
I learned to swim at Larsen Pool, now Charlie Sava Pool, and often reminisce about
playing on the jet plane in Larsen Park. Lake Merced was a common training run
for me in high school.
"I currently live in San Francisco with my wife Jane, two kids Quinlan and Ian,
and two dogs Brinkley and Tucker. I grew up in San Francisco, went to Diamond Heights
Elementary School, (now the site of the Police Academy), James Lick Junior High
School, Lowell High School, Cal (Go Bears), and Hastings College of the Law. I also
work in San Francisco and am a Partner in the San Francisco Office of Nixon Peabody
LLP specializing in real estate law. The firm and my partners are extremely supportive
on my civic venture.
"Parks and the outdoors remain an important part in my life. At least twice a week,
I ride or run through Golden Gate Park. During the spring and summer mornings,
I sometimes run through Mountain Lake Park, where at times I forget I am in San
Francisco and still remember an alligator that lurked in those waters once. My
children played at Presidio Heights Playground and Julius Kahn Playground, both
examples of what a neighborhood can do with the Recreation and Park Department.
And, of course, my dogs enjoy their off-leash runs at the dog park in Mountain
Lake Park, a great gathering place for dogs.
"I love the San Francisco Recreations and Park system and continue to discover and
reconnect with our parks. With my background in real estate and many years of service
on non-profit boards and for community organizations, I learned the importance of
open space and how parks contribute to strong, sustainable communities in our City.
Recreational facilities, parks, and open space allow us to play, to bring a sense
of place to our neighborhoods, and to connect us with others and the outdoors.
"Our parks and programs are an integral part of our urban landscape and need to
be enhanced, expanded and remain accessible to meet the changing needs of our communities.
As the newest commissioner, I will at first listen a lot (which is hard for a
lawyer to say and do). Soon, I will work with Commissioners and the Department on
creating new opportunities for our parks and collaborating with the community on
building and expanding our San Francisco Recreation and Parks programs and system."
