1. Swing help?

bhavna12 - 10/31/2012 11:18 pm

Any suggestions on a good infant swing? We live in the
city and don't have much room, so something that
doesn't take up too much space. Should we be buying 2,
1 for each baby. We have two rocker/sleepers but we
feel having a swing might help us in soothing them at
times. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm overwhelmed
with all the options, just like everything else you can
 buy for infants :)Thank youBhavna

Some of my friends really like the MamaRoo. It doesn't
take up too much floor space and is pretty attractive
as far as a swing-like contraptions go. I'd never
heard of it when I purchased my swing, the Fisher Price
Snugabunny. I think my main criteria at the time was a
swing that plugs in (you won't want to be messing with
batteries), something that could be used for awhile,
and one that got overall good ratings. As a bonus, I
use the music option as part of their nap/bed time cue
and they like to look at the mirrored mobile. I bought
two initially on Amazon but ended up returning one
unopened (love Amazon Prime!) because I found that
usually only one of them was in the mood to go in the
swing and either I could hold and soothe the other or
soothing the other wasn't needed. I guess it is
possible if I had two I would on occasion use both at
the same time but I think it wouldn't have been often
enough to take make it worth taking up the valuable
 floor space for me.

3. Bath routine?

PriyaP - 10/31/2012 4:40 pm

Our twins are 7.5 weeks old and so far we've been
giving them baths 2-3 times per week in the afternoons,
but I now want to start them on a daily bathing routine
to get them used to a certain sequence of events before
night time sleeping. I'm thinking since they usually
eat at around 3pm and 6pm, that in between window may
be a good time to bathe them so that after the 6 pm
feeding they will have a sound nap. I realize
eventually we'll want them to eat, bathe and then sleep
but they spit up enough that I think bathing right
after eating isn't a good idea. Our babies eat about
every 3-4 hours except at night when they'll go 5
hours. What are others doing? What's your
 routine?Thanks!

I think 7.5 weeks is too young for daily baths-- my
pediatrician said that he wouldn't be shocked if our
twins had never had a tub bath by their 2 month
appointment! Their skin is still very new. We are
currently bathing our 3.5 mo twins once per week but
are thinking of moving to twice per week. I've asked
around and most people I've talked to agree that moving
to daily baths around six months is a good idea-- by
then they are starting solids and so are messy by end
of day, and they can sit up on their own in the tub-- a
double benefit with twins because you can bathe them at
the same time in the regular tub.We did introduce a
bedtime routine around 7-8 weeks, but for us it just
consisted of changing, swaddling, and then a nice long
nurse in the dark with the white noise machine on.
Works on one twin virtually all the time, the other
twin ~60% of the time-- sometimes he needs bouncing.
It's so nice to have a regular bedtime!

i second the previous reply. once they're eating solid
foods daily and playing outside daily is a good rule of
thumb for transitioning to daily baths. best, jen

Maria has worked for us for 19 years as office cleaner,
house cleaner, nanny to now 8 year old son and nanny to
now 5 year old twins. She is still currently employed
with us two days a week to clean and sometimes watch
kids on Saturday and Wednesday. For the last 15 months
Maria has also worked for another newborn twin family
on Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays. They are relocating
out of SF and will no longer need her services.Maria is
a fantastic individual. She will clean your house top
to bottom, wash all the clothes all while your children
are well cared for. She is a mature women with 2
college aged children of her own. She is originally
from Peru so english is her second language. She is a
US citizen. If you would like to know more about Maria
please feel free to call Wendy at 415-637-1696. She is
available potentially Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
and Friday. She would prefer a minimum of 3 day
 commitment.

Take the herb Fenugreek, most affordably found on
drugstore.com. You'll be amazed at how well it works
at increasing your production. Good luck!

Update: just did breast compressions during my regular
between-feed pump this morning and got 5 oz, whereas
normally I get 3-4! Thanks felisa for the lesson-- it
 worked really well!

a great tip someone told me... make each pump session
20minutes (without pause) you will have your first
letdown of milk in the first 10 minutes, but at around
15 minutes you will have a second letdown of milk. The
second letdown will be less, but definitely adds to the
total amount of milk for the session!

just wanted to pass this info along, wish someone had
told me this before the 3 month mark...pumping is on
average only 25% as effective as your babies'
latching/suckling. so, if you pump four ounces, your
baby conceivably could suckle 16 oz! babies are MUCH
more efficient than pumps. so, if each twin seems
satiated after eating at the breast, take it as an
indication that they got plenty of delicious mama's
milk! :)hope this helps.also, the rule with fenugreek
is to take it 'until your skin smells like maple
syrup'! goat's rue tincture also helped me a lot.
 best, jen

oh, and the hospital pumps are good for increasing
supply. the non-hospital pumps are best once supply is
established. i'd try the tinctures first and see how
that helps. there's also dopermidone that a lot of
moms of twins take. i can send you a link of where to
buy it if you're interested, please tentmail me. best,
 jen

A lactation consultant told me babies take in on
average 3 to 4 oz at the breast, which at 7 to 8
feedings per day makes your babies' total daily
consumption very average (~25 oz give or take). For
most babies, the bottle is easier than nursing so they
will consume more if offered. My twins at a great, not
average, breastfeeding session will consume at most 5
oz (based on a scale measurement). Whereas from a
bottle they can easily consume 6 oz of milk, and have
taken in on the upper end 7 to 8 oz. When I first got
the scale, I measured them before and after a couple
bottle feeds and found the scale to have been pretty
accurate relative to itself in correlating the grams
gained to ounces consumed. If you want to continue to
feed your babies at their current frequency, then
offering 4 oz per feed should be okay. You may need to
pace them, though. Pacing can be a pain in the butt
but is effective in making them work harder and eat
less per feed, similar to nursing. If you increase the
volume consumed per feed, then you might actually find
they will consolidate their feedings and drop a couple
of feeds (possibly more sleep!). I think also as you
bottle feed more, a pattern will emerge that is not
discernable when breastfeeding, which is your babies'
preferences for when they consume more or less. Are
your babies consistently taking 5 oz from the bottle or
are there variations? I suppose this doesn't address
your pumping concern if they are in fact consuming more
than you're pumping. From what you describe, your supply
does not seem to be an issue so renting a hospital
grade pump may not be necessary. However, if you do
need to increase supply because you are pumping more
now and pumping isn't as efficient as nursing and
supplements alone aren't enough, then perhaps renting a
hospital grade pump for a month or so to boost pumping
supply would be helpful. Regarding the cluster
pumping, that is to increase supply and isn't done at
every session. I agree with kjlisle's suggestion of
pumping for 20 minutes in most instances. I probably
wasn't clear in a previous post - sorry! As someone
else suggested also, I have found manual compressions
to be helpful, glad to hear that is working for you,
maybe that's all you'll need. If you're short an ounce
or two for a feeding after pumping 20 minutes, you
could also pump again 10 minutes later and you will
likely be able to top off the pumping session. It is
an extra session but because it is closely following
another, there won't be an extra setup or pump parts to
be washed. Best wishes for a smooth transition back to
 work!
