Dear Friends,

As the year begins to wind down and we celebrate Thanksgiving, I want to take a 
brief moment to express how much all of your support means to us at the San Francisco
Recreation and Park Department.  Whether you and your family members are participants
in our programs, volunteers, or frequent park visitors, all of you help make our
 parks better.

We've accomplished a great deal over the past year. Our parks remain clean and beautiful,
our programs and events have never been as popular, and we continue to renovate 
and rejuvenate our parks and recreation centers all across the city.  Earlier this
month, San Francisco voters gave us a tremendous vote of confidence through their
overwhelming approval of the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond.

Our successes are shared, and I want to assure you that we'll continue to work hard
to make sure your city park department remains the Number One park system in the
 nation, as the Trust for Public Land recently named us.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and please enjoy and cherish your time with your loved
 ones.

Sunset Community Celebrates the New and Improved Sunset Rec Center

District 4 Supervisor Carmen Chu and Hydra Mendoza from the Mayor's Office, along
with 750 of their closest friends from the Sunset District, helped cut the ribbon
on the newly renovated Sunset Recreation Center on November 16.  The event marked
the completion of a $14 million project that transformed the original center, built
in 1951, into a state-of-the-art community center featuring flexible and adaptable
spaces for a variety of uses.

The center, funded by the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, includes 
a number of green features, including LEED Silver Certification, a water infiltration
and retention area that will take building stormwater to landscaped areas, and solar
panels on top of the clubhouse room to help offset electrical costs.

Also in attendance at the event were Recreation and Park Commissioners Tom Harrison
and Allan Low, Rec and Park GM Phil Ginsburg, DPW director Mohammed Nuru, Susan 
Pontius from the SF Arts Commission and about 500 students from nearby Lawton Alternative

Save the Date: Holiday Tree Lighting on December 6

Come  celebrate the start of the holiday season at San Francisco Recreation  and
 Parks' annual Holiday Tree Lighting at McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate  Park (501 
Stanyan Street), Thursday, December 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.,  featuring free carnival
rides, arts and crafts, live entertainment and a  visit from Santa. For more information,

The 2013 season of the San Francisco Youth Baseball League is right around the corner
in March 2013.  Registration begins December 6, at 10 a.m.  Fees are $80 per player,
which includes coaching, uniforms, practice and games.  Multiple divisions for both
