Join us for Dew Tour Community Day this Sunday, October 21
The Dew Tour Toyota City Championships is a free, four-day action sports and lifestyle
festival coming to San Francisco, October 18-21. The event features skateboarding,
BMX and FMX competitions with live music and the Dew Tour Experience, where fans
can get athlete autographs, play games, ride the Skate and BMX fan courses, win
prizes and receive giveaways.
The Dew Tour and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department are declaring
Sunday, Oct. 21 Dew Tour Community Day and inviting everyone to join us for the
Dew Tour Experience, athlete appearances, skate and BMX clinics, athlete demos
and more.
* Mtn Dew's Skate Team demo
* Skate contest hosted by FTC Skate Shop
* Demo by Mongoose BMX team, including Steve McCann, Cam White, Ben Wallace and
Greg Illingworth. At the end of the day, Mongoose will graciously donate 20 BMX
bikes to San Francisco Recreation and Parks for use in future youth BMX programs.
* Youth clinics and instruction from Camp Woodward instructors, some of the best
coaches in the nation
* Visit the KNTV booth and donate a used or new skateboard to Boys & Girls Club
of San Francisco, and enter for a chance to win great prizes from the Dew Tour.

Our annual Scaregrove event is coming up on Saturday, October 27, from 3 p.m. to
9 p.m., featuring carnival rides, haunted houses, live entertainment, games and
food for sale. Pre-sale tickets will be available on Mon 10/15. Tickets can be
purchased at McLaren Lodge Annex M-F from 9am to 5pm up until the October 26th.

McLaren Park Natural Areas Work Party on October 27
Join us for a Natural Areas work party and Fire Ecology Walk at McLaren Park on
Saturday, October 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. After the tour, stick around to help
clean up the park. Join volunteers and Rec and Park staff as we remove discarded

Tenderloin's Betty Traynor Wins $2,500 as a Finalist for 2012 Cox Conserves Award
Congratulations to Betty Traynor, a tireless advocate for Boeddeker Park in the
city's Tenderloin District, for being selected as a finalist for the 2012 Cox Conserves
Heroes Award. For over a decade, Betty has organized park improvements through
clean up and planting days as a member of the Friends of Boeddeker Park. Her work
also brings diverse community members together through youth art activities and
music events. Cox Conserves Heroes is an awards program created by KTVU's parent
company, Cox Enterprises, and The Trust for Public Land (TPL). The program honors
Heroes among us who work to create, preserve, improve or enhance the shared outdoor
places in our communities. As a finalist, Betty will receive $2,500 for the playground.

Rec & Park is proud to be an organizational partner of the 5th Annual NEN Awards,
to be held at City Hall the night of Wednesday, January 16th. The Awards celebrate
the amazing work of community leaders and organizations in San Francisco's neighborhoods.
As is the tradition with the NEN Awards, the winners are nominated by the community.
Of the many categories to choose from, we are especially eager to hear who you
feel should receive the "Outstanding Park Volunteer Group" award.

All-City Youth Basketball League Coming Soon!
Youth hoopsters, join our 2013 All-City Youth Basketball League, running January
7 through March 16, 2013. Multiple divisions and levels. Games are played on Thursdays,
Fridays and Saturdays. $65-$75 per player; $450 per team. Registration begins November

Mobile Rec Unit Coming to Rochambeau Playground this Saturday, October 20
The Department's Mobile Rec unit will be out at Rochambeau Playground this Saturday,
October 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering city youth free access to some amazing
recreation activities. Funded by a grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation and the
San Francisco Parks Alliance, our Mobile Rec equipment travels from site to site
each week, offering kids the chance to experience non-traditional sports like
rock climbing, skateboarding and BMX biking. Come out this Saturday to Rochambeau
Playground (25th Avenue, between Lake and California) and get out and play. Look
forward to our Mobile Rec team at a playground near you!

An Event That's Truly for the Dogs-- This Saturday, October 20
The sixth annual DOGTOBERFEST will be held at Upper Douglass Dog Park, located at
27th & Douglass Streets in San Francisco, on Saturday, October 20, from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Admission is free and families are invited to bring well-socialized dogs
to participate in a variety of fun events, including costume contests, pet photography,
obedience contest and goodies for dogs and their owners, as well as a prize drawing
