Cayuga Playground Lays Claim to the Title of Best Park in the City

Cayuga Playground had a bit of a coming-out party on Saturday, August 17, as a crowd
of 300-plus gathered to celebrate the park's grand reopening after a $9.4 million
renovation project under the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond. No longer
one of the city's least known park jewels, the word is out now that Cayuga is one
of the city's most beautiful and special parks not to be missed. The park includes
a brand new 3,400 square-foot clubhouse, greening elements and a fully-accessible
playground, but the real star of the show is the spirit of art that flows throughout
the four-acre park. Sprinkled throughout the park are more than 130 wooden sculptures
created by retired gardener Demetrio Braceros, who spent 22 years at the park repurposing
fallen trees into works of art depicting animals, birds, reptiles and famous personalities,
including former-Mayor Willie Brown, Princess Diana and Herb Caen. Saturday's event
was hosted In partnership with the SF Arts Commission, which also commissioned local
artist Eric Powell to create two stunning entry gates; DPW, Supervisor John Avalos;
and the Cayuga Improvement Association. Next time you're looking for a day of fun
in the park, stop by Cayuga Playground [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001N-xBHGGuwjJg5x5X4WT29O7hHub1MSMsgdUrqWCwzt0CqFExhSgV25cAJ1L34tdovvhjexpkORGYD0TXTWf5rB3rRS9rQeBXNd0S7be98y0UujlIfGlfpzpQvyzieVwm].
