McLaren Park's Philosopher's Way Offers Peace, Contemplation and Stunning Views

The San Francisco Arts Commission, the Public Utilities Commission and Rec and
Park were joined by Supervisors John Avalos, David Campos and Malia Cohen at a
public dedication for a joint project on January 5. Philosopher's Way is a new 2.7-mile

artists Peter Richards and Susan Schwartzenberg. Incorporated into existing trail
systems, Philosopher's Way runs along the park's perimeter and features 14 "musing
stations" designed to encourage personal thought and contemplation, while highlighting

Christmas Bird Count4Kids with the SF Botanical Garden on Saturday, January 12

Children 8-16 are invited to bring a parent and participate in the SF Botanical
Garden's first ever Christmas Bird Count4Kids, at the Botanical Garden in Golden
Gate Park. On Saturday, January 12, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., six teams of junior
birders will gather to count the more than 44 birds commonly found in the garden.
It's a great way to explore nature with your child.

First there will be a binocular boot camp to train the kids on how to observe
the birds. Then, we'll split up into teams of six kids, each accompanied by one
parent. The kids are the birders, and the parents are there to assist and act
as the recorders. Each team will be led by a pair of experienced birders. After
the 90-minute observation walk, the teams will return to the County Fair Building
for a brown bag lunch and to tabulate their results. The kids will do the presenting
and a live count will be done, with parents and other family members present.

The Christmas Bird Count4Kids is co-sponsored by Sonoma Birding, whose founders
Tom Rusert and Darren Peterie came up with the concept. For more information,

An Evening with Will Rogers/Trust for Public Land on January 14

The Commonwealth Club of California, in association with SF Rec and Park, brings
you an evening with Will Rogers, President and CEO of the Trust for Public Land.
This event will take a look at America's increasing need for more and better urban
parks. As urban areas become ever more densely populated, and urban populations
ever more sedentary, both the health and economic benefits that vibrant park systems
provide to local economies have too often been overlooked. Rogers will discuss how
local conservation communities have worked together to educate their neighbors and
to inspire more leaders to commit public and private resources to enhance our parks.

Monday, January 14, 2013, at 6 p.m. (with a networking reception at 5:30 p.m.)

Cost: $20 standard, $7 students (with valid ID); MEMBERS FREE
