July is Park and Recreation Month!

Celebrate National Park and Recreation Month in July! Each year, the National Recreation
and Park Association (NRPA) [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001VrjWSrXwXo58yaCDjnnnVS-RyODqZ9ANIEZHcJPbtRjEWRQP9uvLTpvtwnKuk3PZMmuRkXqcekzYJWXedKVlIhYMQ_uDs3Ax97YbBngegAup_495nK8FcA==]
partners with local and state organizations across the country to highlight the 
value of parks.

This year, San Francisco Recreation and Parks will feature a wide array of events
throughout the month, including volunteer days, concerts, a teen talent competition,
park openings, and a special Play Day at the new Sue Bierman Park Playground on 
July 20.

On July 9, the city's Board of Supervisors will introduce a resolution declaring
 July Rec and Park Month in San Francisco, and will also honor local teachers who
participated in the department's Youth Stewardship Program this past year. The Youth
Stewardship Program partners teachers with our park volunteer professionals to develop
a curriculum for students to learn about nature and stewardship of our green spaces.

Volunteer News Wrap-Up

College Track at Bayview Park

A group of youths put citizenship into action at K.C. Jones Playground in Bayview
Park on June 28.  College Track Program Director Miguel Abad led a group of 14 youth
volunteers in a community service project at this busy park site located along the
3rd Street corridor.  With such an abundance of facilities including indoor swimming,
baseball fields and a kids' playground, their contribution to this healthy activity
hub benefits many neighbors.

Juri Commoners

Neighbors  convened on June 29 for their monthly Saturday workday at Juri Commons.
 The Juri  Commoners are volunteers who care for Juri Commons, a park in the  southwestern
corner of San Francisco's  Mission District, built on the old railroad right-of-way
between  Guerrero Street, San Jose Avenue and 25th and 26th Streets. They work on
 the park one Saturday morning a month.  Sharing conversation, coffee  and pastries,
they provide needed attention to a  verdant pedestrian pathway.

Birding for Kids & Families on July 6 and August 3

Saturday mornings, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Meet at front gate of San Francisco Botanical Garden, 9th Avenue at Lincoln Way,
 for a guided bird walk for children 5 to 12 years of age. The Saturday walk begins
with a mini-class-show and tell on calls and songs, beaks, bones and wings etc. 
This monthly program is oriented toward young students and their families. All youngsters
must be accompanied by an adult. Free field journal provided to children. Please
 bring binoculars if you have them, and a pencil for recording bird sightings.

Teen/Family Safe Driving Clinic at Candlestick Park on August 4

In partnership with the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department, the Golden Gate
Chapter (GGC) of the BMW Car Club of America (BMWCCA) is pleased to announce a special
car control clinic oriented towards teen drivers and their families, and at a reduced
price compared to our normal clinics. This all-day clinic will be held in the parking
lot at Candlestick Park on Sunday, August 4.

Using their own cars, students will learn the hands-on physics of car control, pushing
the limits of tire adhesion in a safe, controlled situation. A trained driving instructor
accompanies each student to provide immediate feedback while students maneuver their
cars through exercises laid out with orange rubber cones in a closed parking lot.
 Exercises are designed to be fun, safe, challenging, and educational-and each 
exercise teaches a specific skill.

* Registration is ONLY open to drivers aged 16 to 21, and their adult parents (we
note that some teens learn better without their parents around, while others enjoy
sharing the day with their parent(s)).
* All registrants must have a valid driver's license by the day of the clinic - 
sorry, no learner's permits.
* Registrants under the age of 18 MUST bring a completed and notarized minor waiver.
* Two paid registrants can share the same car (same driving time as separate cars).
* No minivans, SUVs, or SAVs allowed (due to their high center of gravity).
* $110 registration fee includes lunch, t-shirt, and a one-year membership to the
BMW CCA (normally $198).
* Early/advance registration for San Francisco residents through SFRPD is open now!
