Marina Yacht Harbor West Reopens This Thursday, July 11

Come out this Thursday, July 11, at 11 a.m., and celebrate the grand reopening of
the Marina Yacht Harbor West. Supervisor Mark Farrell, Assemblymember Phil Ting,
 youth, and members of the local boating community will be on hand to join in the
festivities.  A climbing wall, kayaks and Blue Water Sail Boats will also be available
for those who want to experience all the Marina and waterfront has to offer.

Sue Bierman Park Playground Set to Open on July 20

Join Zynga, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, Friends of the Waterfront Playground
and SF Rec and Park for a free community play day and celebration marking the opening
of the city's newest playground at Sue Bierman Park, Saturday, July 20, beginning
at 10 a.m.  Enjoy games, arts & crafts, carnival rides and food trucks-- fun for
 the entire family.  Sue Bierman Park is located across from the Ferry Building 
on The Embarcadero at Washington Street.

YSP Teachers Receive BOS Recognition

In  celebration of National Park and Recreation Month in July, the San  Francisco
Board of Supervisors, led by Board President David Chiu, passed a resolution on 
July 9 declaring  it Rec and Park Month in the city and also recognized 47 local
 teachers  who participated in this past year's Youth Stewardship Program.

The Department's Youth Stewardship Program (YSP) engages students, 2nd-12th grade,
in environmental education and service-learning projects throughout San Francisco's
parks and open spaces. Our mission is to foster in youth an understanding of their
important role in helping to build healthy social and natural communities. The program
is free and available to any school or youth group in San Francisco. Check out our

Smurfs Visit Golden Gate Park with an Aura of Blue Awesomeness

Papa Smurf, Handy Smurf and Smurfette hitch a ride on a gardener's cart on their
 way to Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park on July 10.
The Smurfs were in town this week to help "bluetify" the city's park spaces in  
anticipation of the worldwide release of Columbia Pictures/Sony  Pictures Animation's
"The Smurfs(TM)2," in theaters July 31.  In honor of the Smurfs' timeless message
of harmony with the environment, the studio  is orchestrating a nationwide series
of environmental efforts  celebrating "America the Bluetiful," in which kids and
 their parents can  meet the Smurfs as they clean up their local parks, encourage
 recycling, plant trees, and discover other ways they can help "bluetify"  our country.

left behind.

Rec Idol Semi-Finals on July 19

Come support the young men and women vying to be this year's Rec Idol, Friday, July
19, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Adults $5; Youth/Seniors
$3; Children 5 and under are free.  Raffle, food and silent auction.  The Palace
 of Fine Arts Theatre is located at 3301 Lyon Street.
