Anyone out there interested in taking over the
Newsletter? I find that I just don't have the
bandwidth to focus on website conversion (from BigTent
here, to a snazzy news user-friendly blog format) while
handling both the duties of Prez AND Newsletter Editor.
(AND - once we have the blog, the newsletter, in its
current form, will go away.)Please let me know if you
have any interest/availability, and I can give you more
details about what's involved! It is fun, and gets to
access to interesting people/sites/experts, etc. and
the newsletter team is a GREAT bunch (who provide the
 bulk of the content.)
 Thanks!NatashaPresident at sfpom.org

We recently really enjoyed Fremont Peak State Park --
it's right near Mission San Juan Bautista, so not too
far away - just a little over an hour, if I recall
correctly. We got a lovely spot on a hill/ridge,
partially under trees, partially open - w/ a view of
Monterey Bay to one direction, and the valley to the
other. Some stuff that worked for us: Getting some
library books with characters going camping ahead of
time (I know that got our girls really interested....)
We got them each a special little treat (their old new
little flashlights...) Kept what we could of our home
routine, and told them ahead of time what to expect...
how it'd be darker than in the City, how there'd be
beautiful stars to look at, hikes, flowers, maybe wild
animals to spot, owls and different bird songs to
hear... Consider restroom proximity when picking your
site, and back up options. (Ours were small enough
that we just kept a Bjorn potty in the tent with us,
cause it got COLD at night ((but this was in the
spring)) Don't hesitate to overpack a little if you
need to, especially if you can keep extra stuff in your
car. You might need more changes of clothing that you
expect, just cause of dirt, campfire smoke, etc. Be
sure they know about poison oak, and maybe buy some
TecNu, just in case (liquid soap that's brilliant for
poison oak exposure.)And - possibly most importantly -
SMORES!! Keep in mind that at most campgrounds now
you have to cart in your own firewood for their
firepits -- but you can pick up a bundle or 2 at Lowe's
and elsewhere. Searching for sticks is an important
activity for the kiddos (and - in the off-chance that
you're vegetarian, too -- I discovered that Whole Foods
has not 1 but 2 different kinds o' vegan marshmallows.
They take longer to melt than conventional, or maybe I
was just impatient!) Still delicious! All the
loveliness of nature was all very well and good - ours
had a great time - but they still insist that the
'Smores were the high point! I'm sure John Muir was
just the same, as a kid. Have a FABULOUS trip, and
feel free to share your experience and tips here --
camping is such an economical way for us POMs to
 vacation!

Skype/email/phone.... SLEEP while you can! Maybe keep
a journal, or send them postcards about how you're
feeling? I'll bet they'll love those for their baby
books (in a few years). I'll bet having the total
change of scenery will be helpful. Maybe bring an
extra bag for all the toys and treats you'll probably
be tempted to buy them!! : ) Good luck to you!
