Street Soccer USA West Coast Cup at Justin Herman Plaza

This past weekend, the City hosted the Street Soccer USA West Coast Cup, a tournament
to raise awareness for homelessness and bridge the gap between our various communities.
 The tournament included homeless teams from cities across the nation, playing and
competing with corporate teams. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department
 partnered with  the Mayor's Office of Housing Opportunity, Partnership & Engagement
 (HOPE) and Street Soccer USA to host games at Justin Herman Plaza.  For  more information,

year in a row, the Castro Crew blasted away the competition and claimed the championship

Giant Sweep

Event at Moscone Rec Center on June 21 that brought together over 150 youth from
 the St Mary's, Hamilton, Garfield, Mission and Moscone summer sports camps.  Mayor
Lee, GM Phil Ginsburg, Mohammed Nuru (DPW) and Stephanie Nutter (SF Environment)
 led a rousing pep rally on the importance of recycling, cleaning up and not littering.
 The campers also played games and frolicked with mascots Lou Seal and Sweepie. 
 In a playful and educational context, the value of civic pride was transmitted 
to a future generation of San Francisco neighbors.  It was Giant Fun!

Golden State Warriors Interns

Last week, summer Interns from the Golden State Warriors [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001kLKwcOc552BIuDnADuHaG_L6rbPKUN4UO1klmxKrMafTAtWl180ETFjxk8vCyc24zvV8aIpUGb1J-S_A8TcEOfQyHeDy2yHiSrNEE3Vk09Jk5Pse7OEtOoZti-T77_gu]organization
performed a day of volunteer service on Strawberry Hill at Stow Lake in Golden Gate
Park. Under the supervision of master gardener Andy Stone, the Warriors interns 
created a new safe public pathway by installing five enormous and very heavy log-water
bar stairs. They also performed native habitat restoration of the native Swallowtail
butterfly by weeding a steep half-acre hillside and planting California native blue-eyed
grass and fox gloves.

Salesforce Pitches In at the John King Community Garden

summer interns volunteered at the John King Community Garden in  Visitation Valley
last week, under the leadership of Fran Martin of the Greenway Stewards and Rec 
and Park operations staff Robert Watkins and Nick Repetto.  Working alongside teenagers
from the nearby Boys and Girls Club, volunteers successfully re-activated a dormant
community garden by performing weeding, mulching, and clearing underbrush.

Thanks to everyone who works to keep our parks clean and beautiful.
