Anyone go up to Tahoe with twins in the oven? We're
toying with going up to see the US Alpine Championships
at Squaw in a couple of weeks with DH (to ski) and 2
1/2 daughter (to play in the snow). By that point I'll
be 29 1/2 weeks with the twins, and I'm already
starting to slow down quite a bit. DH will probably go
either way (so I'd be stuck alone all weekend with the
kiddo, which may be worse).I'll talk to my OB next
week, but it's good to have real world twin mom
 experience. Thoughts?

I live in Truckee full time now, and I delivered my
twins at 28 weeks, so I'm a really bad person to ask -
but I wouldn't do it. If by chance you went into
pre-term labor you and/or twins would be air lifted to
Reno, where you'd be stuck for the next 2-4 months
depending on their health and recovery. If you're
already feeling like you're slowing down, imagine
 trying to breath/walk/move/chase a 2-yr-old at 7000
feet elevation. I'd tell DH to have a great time, and
to take the 2-yr-old with them to play in the snow
while you get some rest and relaxation. There are
plenty of babysitting options in Tahoe.

Nope, don't do it. Take it easy, and stay within a 20
mile radius of your doc from here on out!

The last trip I did was at 25 weeks - to Park City,
Utah. It was great, and I felt great even at altitude
(I was also newly allowed more movement after a few
weeks of placenta previa). After that, I stayed pretty
much put (though not quite a 20mile radius since my
 work is 40miles from my house :) ). I don't think I
would have done Tahoe at 29.5 weeks with twins (this
discomfort of the car ride alone likely would have been
enough to make me pass on the trip), but your OB should
be able to give you a better sense of whether that
might be an OK option given your specific pregnancy.

Our surrogate went into premature labor at 28 weeks.
Went in for a routine check up and she was 4cm dilated.
The next 6 weeks of keeping the boys in were dicey. I
love skiing and I would hold off.

It can take awhile but is sweet potatoe and squash the
first foods you are giving them? Maybe try oatmeal or
rice cereal, and if you have tried that already bananas
and apples are good to start with. Work your way up to
 those veggies. Good luck!

It's pretty normal for them to experiment with the food
and feeding is very messy. I was never able to get my
first to eat pureed foods (except perhaps fro yo or
apple sauce). I remember being pretty frustrated, but
eventually found those organic puffs were a great
"gateway food" and then I could move her to other soft
finger foods. The problem with that strategy is now at
2 1/2, she now has no interest in veggies, I think in
part because she never ate the pureed veggies early on.
 Good luck.

We did modified baby led weaning (which isn't possible
according to the book, but it worked well for us). We
gave the kids food to play/experiment with, but also
 offered them pureed/soft foods on a spoon. I don't
think they're physically able to get much soft/pureed
food into their mouth on their own at that point, so in
our experience, we had to offer chunks of food that
they would gum/gnaw on. Since they put almost anything
in their mouths at that point, anything we gave them
that they could get a grip on would go straight into
the mouths. We had the most luck with cucumber spears,
and pear spears. Both of those were soft enough that
the kids could get something out of it (flavor, some
give in the texture) but firm enough that it wouldn't
break off in their mouth and choke them. (Randomly one
of my kids really liked steamed asparagus spears,
too.)In addition to giving them spears or chunks of
whatever we had, I offered spoonfuls (me holding the
spoon) of pureed fruits and veggies. (That was how we
modified BLW.)I think in true baby led weaning, it
really doesn't matter when/how much food goes into
their mouths. In my recollection, they continue to get
the nutrition they need from BM/formula up to one year
old. So I think as long as you're giving them as much
milk/formula as they need/want, then the rest should
just be for fun... sort of. Except sometimes the clean
 up!

They did dig the cuke spears and the broccoli trees the
other day--in retrospect I believe the sweet potato
wedges might have been too soft, so way more fun to
 squish than anything else!

I had the same questions as you when I started. So at
the beginning I would give them a little formula to
hold them over then solids and follow up with formula.
When the are enjoying solids just start with solids and
then follow up with bottle or breast. I would definitly
use high chairs so much easier. And you can even give
them bottle in chair or move them to a more comfortable
place. I would ask your pediatrician what she
recommends as to how much you should give them just so
you have something to follow. Everyone has there own
opinion. When mine were 6 months I fed them twice a
day. I gave them oatmeal cereal and bananas or apples.
When the turned 7 month started three times a day. Good
 luck.

Sorry last thing. I feel like I'm still balancing milk
and solid. But once mine had three meals a day there
formula intake was less so right now it's just getting
 them use to new food.

As the previous poster said, everyone approaches this
differently. Based on my reading and conversations, we
offered solids 30-60 minutes after they had a bottle.
Offering them solids when they're really hungry can be
counterproductive, because they don't see solids as a
way to satisfy that hunger, so they get frustrated and
fussy. But offering solids right after a bottle/BM feed
sometimes meant they weren't hungry at all, and
therefore weren't interested in trying any of
it.Because we separated out the solids, we didn't have
the issue of moving them around during a feeding. I
sometimes held them for bottles, but did all solids in
our high chairs... and eventually started doing bottles
in the highchairs, too (ours had a recline function)
because it was so convenient for feeding both together.
I'd say go with instinct on when to offer solids more
than once a day. At some point your children will get
into it, and consume more, and then you can introduce
another meal. I think it took 3-4 months between when
we started solids and we were doing them three times a
day, but I held off on that third meal longer than
necessary, mostly because of scheduling issues. I
wouldn't make any effort to decrease milk/formula
consumption for now. When they start consuming more
solids, they will probably want less milk/formula, but
because it's their primary source of nutrition and they
know best what their bodies need (well, in terms of
food), I'd just keep offering as much as they want.I
think allergic reactions will be obvious (rash,
shortness of breath) although we haven't had any, so
I'm definitely no expert. Lastly, Child of Mine, by
Ellyn Satter is a great book on feeding. It was highly
recommended by the nutritionist at a class I took on
 starting solids.Good luck!

i use baby connect. you can track feedings, sleep,
diaper output, medicine, etc. very very helpful when
someone is sick and you can easily record the medicine,
time, and dose. and it turns everything into a nifty
 graph! :o)
