More info is needed to answer your question. How old is
your child? Was he or she diagnosed after being tested
by an expert qualified in the field? Could it be the
wrong school for your child? Some schools just want the
child to take meds to make their job as teachers
easier. The particular school environment is also a
factor. My son was once in a classroom that was so
chaotic that it was hard for me to read a newspaper at
the back of the room -- he was clearly not going to
succeed there. (That same teacher also dealt with kids
who misbehaved by banning them from recess -- the one
place they could let off steam.) In addition, the
collaborative learning that is now the fashion where
kids work in groups can be particularly challenging for
distraction-prone kids with ADHD.A therapist is not the
first line of defense. You need a whole incentive-based
behavior plan that the school buys into. UCSF's HALP
Clinic has a class with separate sections for both kids
and parents. In addition, try to support something
your child is really good at. My son was awesome at
skateboarding, so we actually got him a private coach.
This was a lifeline for him -- kids with ADHD get told
so often what they are doing wrong that some hobby that
brings them positive acknowledgement is imperative for
their self esteem. Let me know if you'd like any more
 info. Best of luck, Virginia
