A New Era Begins at Dolores Park on March 1

Please join Supervisor Scott Wiener, San Francisco Recreation and Park Department
GM Phil Ginsburg, Dolores Park Works and park advocates for a groundbreaking ceremony
of world-famous Mission Dolores Park, Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 10 a.m. Rain or
Shine.

For nearly a century, San Franciscans have enjoyed the 16 acres of recreational
opportunities provided by Mission Dolores Park. To help keep up with the use of
the park and make much-needed infrastructure improvements, over 71% of San Francisco
voters approved the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, a $185 million
general obligation bond that includes $13.2 million to improve Mission Dolores Park.

When the park is completed, you will find new bathrooms, renovated tennis and basketball
courts, a new multi-use court, two improved designated off-leash dog play areas,
new bike racks, new pathways, a new overlook in the southeast corner, improved
irrigation, and improved ADA access.

Saving Water in Our Parks

Maintaining beautiful, green park spaces in drought conditions is no simple task,
and as an agency that stewards over 4,000 acres of public park land and as one
of the largest water users in the city, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department
takes its responsibility to conserve water seriously. Since 2008, our department
has achieved an 18 percent reduction in water usage in a concerted effort to conserve
our precious resources. Read how we've been able to do that and find out what else
we're doing in light of the governor's recent declaration of a drought emergency.

Black History Month: Jackie Battle Honored at the Board of Supervisors

In honor of Black History Month, longtime Recreation and Park Department employee
Jackie Battle was recognized at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors meeting at
City Hall on Tuesday, February 25. Jackie, who began working for the department
as a recreation director in 1985, is currently a recreation supervisor based out
of Minnie & Lovie Ward Rec Center in the Oceanview/Ingleside neighborhood. Over
the years, her innovative programs and events have proven to be some of the Department's
more popular and enduring offerings for the city's children, youth and families,
including the annual Turkey Cook-Off, annual teen girls retreat, Rec Idol, various
citywide teen programs, and Camp Gourmet. Most recently, Jackie has helped organize
the department's longstanding annual MLK Luncheon, which honors the accomplishments
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the contributions of African-Americans in the
Department, both past and present. Many of Jackie's friends and colleagues, including
GM Phil Ginsburg, were on hand to see her receive her Certificate of Honor from
Supervisor John Avalos (inset). See video of the certificate presentation and Jackie's
