We are expecting twins in April and we already have a
son who will be turning two when the twins born. We
have a great night doula lined up to help us but at $40
per hour we are wondering if we can get by with fewer
than five nights a week for three months. We can afford
it if necessary, but wanted to know what this group
thought. My husband will return to work soon after the
babies are born and I will be home with the three kids,
likely with a nanny during the day, at least in the
beginning until I adjust. I'd love to hear
recommendations on the number of nights per week and
for how long, as well as if $40/hour is standard.
 Thanks!

Is she helping with your 2-year old too? Is she helping
you with breastfeeding or other recovery stuff or is
her focus on the babies? I had a night nanny who did
everything for the babies as far as cleaning/sanitizing
bottles and my pump gear, changing, burping, bottle
feeding when I wasn't breastfeeding, soothing if
necessary, baby laundry and cleaned our kitchen/dinner
dishes, and ultimately had our babies sleeping 12 hours
by about 4.5 months. She was $30/hr which I felt was
pretty standard. $40 sounds high, but again, if she's
helping you recover or has additional responsibilities
with your 2 year old, that might be reasonable. I did 5
nights a week, sun-thu as my husband really couldn't
help those night. As far as duration, I think many
people do 2 months or maybe slightly longer as it's a
huge expense. To us, it was worth it to do a bit
longer, about 4.5 months, until they were sleeping 7-7
with just a dreamfeed at 10pm. By 3 months or so, many
babies are doing a long stretch from 10pm-4am or so
(though I'm sure that varies by baby!), so you could
consider doing fewer nights a week at that point.

Congratulations! We payed $35/hour for help with our
twins, no other kids, and she would do the kids
laundry, all bottles and dishes, bottle feed, wake me
up to feed, and some other little things that I can't
think of right now. I've heard $40/hour is typical for
twins, though. We had her for three months,
sunday-thursday.I'd say the first month is the most
important to have 5 nights a week. We probably could
have done 3 nights/week for the last few weeks but we
had already committed to 5 and also it was soooo nice
to know that I could sleep a few hours without worrying
and know that I would have a stack of clean clothes and
clean bottles in the morning. We also had a hard time
paying for it, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
We were just nicer people when we had help and we could
enjoy the babies so much more- rather than just being
 robots with them.Good luck!
