1. need advice! getting induced tomorrow at 38 weeks
--------------------------------------------------------
RKwatra22 - 1/9/2014 11:11 am

Hi everyone! I need some advice. I'm pregnant with girl
and boy twins and will be 38 weeks tomorrow. My doctor
has scheduled me for inducement tomorrow (BC twins r
considered full term by 38 weeks). Anyone have a
similar experience or any advice? The babies r healthy
and vertex vertex and I had wanted to go into labor
naturally, but these babies seem pretty cozy. I'm
worried about any risks associated with inducement...
Thoughts? Or advice and recommendations from ur own
 experience?

Wow, so close!! You can always ask them to start the
lowest dosages possible (in general, start with least
invasive things first, and see how it goes.) I was in
a similar boat, at 38w5d, and only agreed to induce as
my doc was about to go out of town and was the only one
willing to do a breach (vaginal) delivery. I was
showing a few signs of pre-labor already, tho, so it
took a minimal dose for me, and my water broke about 2
hrs later! It's GREAT that both of yours are
vertex! Can you ask the docs to wait a little longer?
If everyone's healthy, it would seem ok to wait until
you go in to labor naturally, I would think.... it's
certainly what's been done all over the world for
generations... Is there a doctor or midwife at your
delivery hospital you could chat with about this? It
sounds like you're not 100% on board with the
inducement plan, and maybe a brief discussion could get
everyone on the same page (ideally yours... but if not,
you ought to feel comfortable with the Plan.) The one
thing I do recall being a possible side effect of the
induction drugs was some swelling of hands i desperately wanted to
feel my babies
coming down through the birth canal; i also wanted to
be in a position to move between baby a and baby b's
births in case baby b got stuck - which i had to do - i
climbed off the or table between babies...seriously.).
i have to say that pitocin without epidural is not fun.
also note that once your water is broken the 24 hour
countdown to them wanting to do a c-section starts.
the positions you need to get into for continuous
monitoring on both babies is a bit crazy. for me it
was truly a marathon. mind over matter. eye on the
prize. i had wanted a home birth. had been shocked to
find out i was pregnant with twins. knew i didn't want
to have more children. felt like this was my only
chance for the birth i'd hoped for. i gave it
EVERYTHING i had. are you using breast pump to try to
induce yourself? are you getting acupuncture to try to
induce? have your partner stimulate your nipples and
clitoris to try to induce at home? walk, walk, walk to
try to induce yourself. just in case you don't
know...epidural often slows/stalls labor. can also
cause the babies to crash or you to crash. epidural
also provides pain relief to you but not to the
babies...which is what can cause the fetal distress. my
childbirth educator said the best chance of me having a
vaginal birth with twins was to avoid epidural. just
fyi. but my babies were vertex transverse...so i was
higher likelihood for c-section than you are with v/v.
just wanted to mention this in case you didn't already
know that.i never got to experience feeling my water
break. i'd wanted to experience it too. in hindsight,
i was so healthy and the girls were too, there was no
need for induction. grr. oh well. we didn't fit the
stats. my individual risk deviated from the standard
statistical risk. if you want to talk, just call. my
mobile is 510/409-9911. love to you. hope you get
what you want. based on my experience, you'll likely
have to fight hard for it. find all of your resolve,
 mama.my best, jen

also, just wanted to say, like i natasha, i definitely
wouldn't have induced if my ob and midwife *both*
weren't going out of town on friday! and, the swelling
i had after 4 days of pitocin and saline drip iv was
... hahahah ... not good. took many days/more than a
week, i think, to improve. i actually was so swollen
that my toes went kind of numb in one foot. it took a
few weeks for that sort itself out. that was all
related to pitocin/saline drip, imo. anyhow. just a
couple of afterthoughts. more data for you have/help
you with your decision making. best, jen

Wow, such a wonderful moment for you! On the verge of
meeting your babies. Congrats! I thought that my ob
wasn't going to let me go past 40 weeks, so at 39 weeks
I took it upon myself to begin inducement by
acupuncture, which I had done for my previous
pregnancy. It worked, and I went into labor naturally
at 39 weeks. I went to Giulietta Octavio at Integral
Body. I think it's worth asking your OB if he/she will
let you go a little longer, since it doesn't sound like
there's a compelling reason to induce. After the fact,
my doc said she would have let me go to 40 wks, and I
wished I would have had a more direct conversation with
her to find that out. Good luck!

last thought: it's worth asking (over and over again)
"am i okay? is baby a okay? is baby b okay?" if the
answer to all three questions is yes, then declining
interventions ought to be a reasonable option. if it's
not for some reason, i'd want a good explanation. of
course, if the answer to any of those three questions
is no...different discussion. also, other types of
things to ask: are there any side effects/can't
reverse and change course per intervention. e.g., i
declined misoprostol but opted for the foley bulb
because - as far as i understood - the effects of
misoprostol (or cytotec) can't be stopped once
administered and in rare instances causes uterine
rupture. whereas, the foley bulb was a physical (not
chemical) intervention. it would either work or it
wouldn't and the bulb could be physically removed. a
great line of questioning to ask is "what comes next"
if we do 'a' and it works, then what? if we do 'a' and
it doesn't work, then what? etc. most of the time an
 intervention begets another intervention, and
eventually one thing after another leads to c-section
with twins. sometimes i wonder if i should have asked
to be discharged after the foley bulb. and just head
home for a few more days. but then again my ob and
midwife were heading out of town... anyhow. hope
this all is helpful. and empowering. thinking of you!

Hi Hillary, I LOVE our housekeeper. We've had many

gal is by far the best. Not sure where you live, but
she works in the city. Email me if you'd like her info

I just got home from the hospital on Sunday and am so
thankful we have a night doula 5x/week. I'm trying to
breast feed and increase my supply with pumping. Not
getting much sleep as it is and would get a lot less if
I didn't have her. I wish we had 7 days a week. We
pay $45/hour. Worth every penny. I'm going to try to
taper when the time spent feeding/pumping decreases.
