1. Choosing a School in SFUSD

Hi Parents,How's it going with SFUSD tours? I've been
on about 10 tours and a couple private schools. So I've
barely seen a fraction of what there is to see. I'd
love to chat with other parents about what we've
observed at different schools. What are your top
picks??Are you looking at T-K?? I'm worried about all
the standardized testing and homework I'm seeing. I
went to SFUSD as a kid and it was a very mixed bag. It
seems like it can get stressful for kids now way too
early. I saw that in a first grade tour the other day.
I'm not sure how Common Core with change the tests/ HW.
Here are some highlights for me:1. SF Community (K-8)
Project-based curriculum School decided not to
teach to tests at all, which I love. Gardening
class Small number of involved parents, Very
diverse student body2. Lakeshore (K-5): Frequent
 PE/gross motor, Enrichment: art, gardening,
diversity. Big school: good for identical twins 3.
Mira Loma (K-5) Pretty fantastic socio-emotional
curriculum Arts curriculum sponsored by PTA,
 Very inexpensive afterschool program.But ah, I don't
know really. I'm still feeling very confused. Which
private school are you looking at? We looked at Synergy
and liked it the best as far as privates at it was a
bargain at $18K/yr. But I don't think its possible to
split up twins at that school….Is anyone going to
T-K?? I'm not applying to T-K until next year, so the
continued discussion might be helpful to some.I'd love
to hear from any parents in/or have gone thru
 T-K....-Darça

I'm in my second go-around with elementary school
tours, at the same time touring high schools for the
twins. My youngest is in Transitional Kindergarten at
Tule Elk in Cow Hollow and loves school!Let me address
one of your concerns first. This spring, the children
in SFUSD will no longer be taking the typical state
tests with bubble in test forms. As the District
transitions toward the Common Core standards, children
will be assessed with a new system on computers and/or
iPads this year.Keep in mind that SFUSD, like all
public schools, are mandated to follow state
 standards/guidelines (http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/).
Standards list expectations for what students should
know and be able to do at each grade level. All the
teachers within the District have their certified
teaching credential. Independent schools do not
require their teachers to be credentialed.Although it's
good to share notes with other parents, keep in mind,
that the wants/needs of each family is very
individualized. What one family likes, another one may
not, whether it's the size of the school or the school
day hours. There are so many great schools and
programs within some of the schools (immersion,
bi-cultural, etc.) , that prioritizing the list is
challenging. However, I've always said, with "choice"
comes responsibility. Just know that wherever your
children end up, they will be successful because you'll
 be involved. :-)

3. Cloth Diapering
--------------------------------------------------------
aserkes - 1/12/2014 2:23 pm

I am expecting twin girls in late April/early May and
want to use cloth diapers. I know there are diaper
services that many have had success with, but as I will
be staying home, have laundry in house, and will have
help for the first two months, I figured I would just
purchase my own. I am leaning towards getting prefolds
and some prefitted diapers (a bit easier for my
husband) along with diaper covers. I'm looking for any
advice on brands, successes, lessons learned, or
diapers you no longer need. These are our first
children and I know the learning curve is steep so any
 information is useful!

Sorry for the previous post with the wrong dates (can't
figure out how to delete :-). Our night nanny will be
out of town Thursday to Monday, 1/23 to 1/27, and we
are hoping to fine someone who might be available to
fill in all or part of the time for our 3.5 month old
twins. Recommendations are greatly appreciated! Jen
