Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 18

The MLK Pool's annual celebration will include speeches by local community leaders
and performances by local groups.  This year, Reverend Willie Williams from the 
Bayview Baptist Ministers Fellowship will be the keynote speaker.  The Golden Gate
Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Young and Gifted Youth Choir, and the Washington
Sisters will perform.  In the pool, the SF Merionettes and the MLK Jr. Blue Dolphin
Swim Team will offer an exhibition of their skills, and Rec and Park and the Bayview
YMCA will offer a free water exercise class.  The day also includes a group walk
 from the Bayview Opera House to MLK Pool in the morning, free swimming for the 
community, lunch, and a MLK Day of Service.

Community Budget Meetings on January 27 and February 3

The new budget season has begun! Join us for an upcoming community budget meeting
on January 27, at Palega Recreation Center, or February 3, at Cabrillo Playground,
from 6-7:30 p.m.  Hear our initial plans for the upcoming year, tell us your budget
priorities, and find out more information on the city's budget process.

Register for Camp Mather Lottery Before February 7

Campers, registration for the 2014 Camp Mather lottery has begun!  Thanks to the
 efforts of the SF Fire Department, the SF Public Utilities Commission, local and
state agencies, and our own camp staff, Camp Mather in the High Sierras largely 
survived the Rim Fire that devastated the Yosemite and Stanislaus National Forest
area earlier this year.  Although impact from the fire no doubt remains, we are 
actively planning for the 2014 camp season and Mather's 90th Anniversary celebration.

Don't miss this year's Inclusion Week at Camp Mather! During this week, Recreation
and Parks will provide trained staff to help facilitate participation of family 
members who are Deaf/hard of hearing or who have disabilities in camp activities,
and provide some great new specialized activities as well. We invite you to register
for any week at camp, but we encourage you to consider choosing Inclusion Week! 
The enhanced activities and inclusiveness benefit all families at camp, as well 
as offering everyone the chance to make new friends!

If you register for this week, please indicate on the lottery registration if you
have a family member who is Deaf/hard of hearing or who has a disability by checking
"I have a family member who has a disability" on the registration form. If you receive
a reservation, our Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator will contact you with more
 information.

Teens, Looking for and After-School Job?

Workreation is a youth employment and training program that is an integral part 
of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's mentorship program. This year
marks the 55th year of the program. All youth, ages 14-17, who either attend school
or live in San Francisco are eligible (18 as long as they are still in high school).

Participants work for minimum wage ($10.55/hour) in a variety of recreational, aquatic,
administrative, sports, and after-school positions throughout the Recreation and
 Park Department, that provide opportunities to develop leadership and problem-solving
skills, teamwork and community awareness. Youth work up to 10 hours per week during
school year programming.

Applications will be accepted Wednesday, December 18 through Friday, January 17.

Healthy Parks, Healthy People Trail Walk at McLaren Park on January 18

Join us for a walk through McLaren Park. This walk is through San Francisco's second
largest park. The program begins with a warm-up, followed by a walk through groves
of redwood and cypress trees.

This activity requires no registration and is free for all. Join us at McLaren Park
at University & Mansell, next to the sign (Third Saturday of Month) 10:00am. Let's
Get Out and Play!

Our professional RPD Guides will provide a short interpretive program designed specifically
for each location. The staff will have first aid equipment and are certified in 
CPR.  Please bring your own water.  Sunscreen and snacks are always encouraged.

Please check local weather forecasts - Trail Walks will be canceled due to rain 
or unsafe conditions.

Hilltop Park Community Workshop on January 23

Two years ago, the Bayview community came together to design a concept plan for 
Hilltop Park. Now, with funding, the park renovation is going to be a reality!

Join us for the kick-off meeting to learn about the project and how you can be involved
in this excellent community park. All ages are welcome, and refreshments will be
 served.
