Celebrating National Park and Recreation Month in July
July is National Park and Recreation Month and it's time get out and visit one or
all of our 220 parks in San Francisco! The National Recreation and Park Association
(NRPA) and SF Rec and Park are challenging you to take one indoor activity outdoors
everyday in July. #JulyOUTisIN
Social Media Challenge
This July, we're asking you to show us how you can spend more time OUTdoors and
IN your parks and recreation sites by posting photos of you or your friends, family,
coworkers and community members doing typical indoor activities outside every day
in July.
You could eat a healthy meal outside - who doesn't love a picnic in the park - make
a phone call to mom, hold a meeting or exercise class in the fresh air, step outside
to brush your teeth, or even sleep out in the open (happy camping)! Use your imagination-the
possibilities are endless!
NRPA will be giving away a $50 Amazon gift card every day at random for those that
post a photo that shows an indoor activity being done outside on Instagram or Twitter
with the hashtag #JulyOUTisIN! They'll also be giving away a whopping $500 Amazon
gift card Grand Prize at random on August 1 to one lucky contest participant who

Lake Merced Boathouse Reopens on July 8
Please join the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and SF Rec and Park in
celebrating the opening of the newly renovated Lake Merced Boathouse on Tuesday,
July 8, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Lake Merced Boathouse,1 Harding Road in San
Francisco). Coffee, tea and light breakfast will be served.

Free World Cup Viewing Parties at Civic Center; Semi-Finals on July 9/Finals on

The USA may have come up a bit short in Tuesday's Round-of-16 match against Belgium,
but that doesn't mean the World Cup party is ending. The San Francisco Recreation
and Park Department, in partnership with America SCORES Bay Area, will be bringing
you the live broadcasts of the semi-finals on July 9 and the finals on July 13.

The First Tee of San Francisco's Judith Powell Bids Us Goodbye
The Recreation and Park Commission and GM Phil Ginsburg recently bid a fond farewell
to Judith Powell, who, for the past ten years, has dedicated her time and inestimable
talents to help guide The First Tee of San Francisco into the thriving organization
that it is today.
Judith joined the new chapter of The First Tee at the renovated Harding Park Golf
Course in 2004, having previously worked for the Special Olympics in the Bay Area.
First starting as Program Director, she became the Executive Director in 2008.
During her tenure, The First Tee of San Francisco has grown from 400 participants
to over 10,000 annually with an annual operating budget of over $1,000,000. Judith
has guided the expansion of The First Tee activities and programming from Harding
Park to additional sites at Visitacion Valley Middle School and, most recently,
at Golden Gate Park Golf Course.
Largely through her efforts, the partnership between The First Tee of San Francisco
and the Recreation and Park Department has been strengthened to provide quality
recreation and life skills for the youth of San Francisco. Congratulations, Judith!

Street Soccer USA Soccer Pitch at Margaret Hayward Playground Opens on July 7
Join Street Soccer USA, Supervisor London Breed, and Rec and Park for a ceremonial
ribbon cutting celebrating the new soccer pitch at Margaret Hayward Playground,
Monday, July 7, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Ceremony at 4 p.m.) The ceremony will be
followed by demonstration games, refreshments, music and appearances by San Jose
Earthquakes players.
