Celebrate Pride Month with SF Rec and Park
Celebrate Pride Month with SF Rec and Park! Each week in June we'll be highlighting
a person, program or park that has had a significant impact on our department. We'll
also let you know about some great upcoming events, including our annual WOW (Women-on-Women)
Dodgeball Tournament on June 20, volunteer events, and the Pride celebration event
at Civic Center on June 28 and 29, where you can stop by our table and pick up a
complimentary flying disc, sticker, magnet or party beads.
This week, we're highlighting one of our most popular recreation buildings, the
Harvey Milk Center for the Recreational Arts.
Overlooking beautiful Duboce Park, the Harvey Milk Center is as unique as the Civil
Rights leader it was named for. Originally dedicated to the Performing Arts, the
building, commonly called "Drama, Dance & Music", was headquarters for the Performing
Arts Division of the Recreation and Park Department since its construction in 1954.
Duboce Park itself, has been a location for arts programming since the early 1920s
when the women volunteers of the San Francisco Urban Story League performed puppet
shows and storytelling in the park for children.
The 23,125-square-foot center reopened to the public in 2009 after an impressive
$12 million renovation to the 55-year old building. Dedicated now to the Visual
as well as the Performing Arts, the Harvey Milk Arts Center has quickly become
the City's newest Digital Destination with state-of-the-art technological facilities
including brand new Sound Recording Studio & Digital Labs.
Located in the southwestern side of Duboce Park, the Harvey Milk Recreational Arts
Building is also home to the Recreation and Park Department's exceptional Photo
Center - the oldest (and one of the largest) public darkrooms for traditional black-and-white
process printing still in existence in the United States. The building also features
a multitude of arts and recreational programming in our expansive Ballroom, Dance
Studio, Art Studios, multiple Exhibition Galleries and Scott Street Labyrinth.
Part of a quartet of Arts Centers under the Cultural Arts Division, the building
was officially re-dedicated in 1979 to Harvey Milk as tribute to the slain City
Supervisor after his assassination in 1978. The building's recent redesign plays
homage to the storied history of the recreational center and Harvey Milk, himself,
in the form of a San Francisco Arts Commission suite of permanent art installations
conceived of by artists Michael Davis and Susan Schwartzenberg. One of those pieces,
"The American Dream: A Tribute to Harvey Milk" memorializes Milk's words, "The American
Dream starts with the neighborhoods..." fittingly upon the building's Eastside.

Play Ball: Renovated Herz Baseball Diamond Reopens
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, in partnership with TLC for Kids
Sports, OC Jones & Sons, Inc., and SF Public Works, welcomed Olympic medalist and
former Team USA softball player Vicky Galindo to Herz Playground on May 31, 2014
to celebrate recent improvements to the park's baseball field, located in the city's
Visitacion Valley neighborhood.
The renovation, part of a larger effort to improve the sports amenities at the
park, was made possible through a generous in-kind grant from the non-profit TLC
for Kids Sports and general engineering contractor OC Jones & Sons, Inc., and support
by San Francisco Public Works. The renovation includes brand new sod, fencing
and infield dirt, players' benches and repairs to the backstop. New features include
an electronic scoreboard and a flagpole.
Earlier this month, dozens of volunteers joined the Recreation and Park Department,
SF Public Works, TLC for Kids Sports and OC Jones & Sons for a work party to help
transform the aging baseball diamond into a beautiful space for kids to play ball.
A pathway project that creates a handicapped accessible link between the adjacent
Coffman Pool and the park's lower basketball court was also made possible by an
in-kind grant by A. Ruiz Construction. Suppliers Granite Rock and Brisbane Recycling
contributed 750 tons of baserock and other materials for the pathway repaving.
Last year, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission, led by commission
vice-president Allan Low, allocated funds from the department's Open Space Contingency
Reserve to renovate the basketball court on the west side of the park. Combined
with the just-completed renovations of the baseball field and the new pathway,
Herz Playground is now one of the premier sports facilities in the city.
