to bring you live broadcasts of World Cup soccer action at Civic Center..  Join

Rec and Park Employees Finish Second in Citywide Softball Tourney

Congratulations to Rec and Park's 2014 employee softball team, which finished second
in the 25th annual Mae Louse Mays citywide tournament on June 21.

Mae Louise Mays was an adoptions worker for  the city during the 1960s and early
 -70s, and a pioneer in recruiting  African American families to adopt African American
children from foster  care. She was also married to the greatest baseball player
 ever, Willie  Mays, who also has had a lifelong commitment to helping children.

On Saturday, June 21, the San Francisco Foster Youth Fund, a  non-profit started
 by children's protective services workers to raise  funds for foster children, 
in partnership with SF Rec and Park, staged the 25th annual charity  softball tournament
at Moscone Playground, featuring two dozen teams and over 500 players.

Rec and Park Commission Approves Potential Park Acquisitions

Great news! The city is one step closer to adding four new parks in the city. On
 June 19, the Recreation and Park Commission voted to adopt a resolution urging 
the Board of Supervisors to purchase the property at 900 Innes Avenue in the India
Basin neighborhood.  The Commission also voted to authorize the Department to enter
into agreements that will help acquire a new potential park site at 851 Bay Street
(Francisco Reservoir) in the Russian Hill neighborhood, and two new parks on a portion
of the old Schlage Lock Company site in the Visitaction Valley neighborhood.  All
told, there could soon be an additional eight acres of open space for San Franciscans
to enjoy!

Volunteers Needed at the Conservatory of Flowers

Comprehensive training program prepares new volunteers to lead tours for adults 
or children.

Jungle Guides introduce elementary school students to the wonders of the rainforest.

Docents educate adult visitors about the Conservatory's fascinating collection of
tropical plants and San Francisco's stunning historic greenhouse.

Training Program

The Conservatory welcomes adult volunteers of

all experience levels. The training program will be held Wednesdays from 1:00 - 
4:00 p.m. from August 6 through September 17.

Shared Commitment

Just like the Conservatory's plants, the volunteer program relies on regular watering
and feeding. That's why we ask all volunteers to commit to two shifts per month 
for at least one year. In return, the Conservatory offers educational and social
 opportunities, free passes and discounts, and an engaging, flexible environment.

Honey Tasting and Pollinator's Tour at the SF Botanical Garden on June 28

In celebration of Pollinator's Week, join the San Francisco Botanical Garden in 
Golden Gate Park on Saturday, June 28, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., for an array of honey
flavors and textures harvested by local beekeeper Robert Mackimmie from City Bees,
a guided pollinator's garden tour, and a discussion of Urban Beekeeping. Join the
SF Beekeeper's Association on beeswax candle making demos as well as other bee related

Lake Merced Boathouse Reopens on July 8
