Glen Canyon Park Playground Reopens March 15

Join Supervisor Scott Wiener, SF Rec and Park GM Phil Ginsburg, the Glen Park Association
and park advocates for the opening celebration of the newly renovated Glen Canyon
Park Playground, Saturday, March 15, at 9:30 a.m. For decades, locals have enjoyed
the beautiful natural landscape and varied recreational offerings at historic Glen
Canyon Park. In recent years, residents have voiced the need for renovating the
park, and in 2008, voted to allocate nearly $6 million of the 2008 Clean and Safe
Neighborhood Parks Bond to promote the park's natural features and provide a new
playground, new tennis courts and an improved entry area for the park.

Rec and Park Celebrates Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month! Each week during March, we'll pay tribute to some
of the many women who've been key figures in San Francisco Recreation and Park Department
history. Last week, you met Rec and Park's own Silver Bullet, Rachelle Henley [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001OeoM8QPO7wdUC69cRT00gbQuzncwbAKvnknP6ebVCxG4IRKOz_q9NCSpojCFqr8hvhABhLKVQHmky7-NcTvrb2susTupYnKesqIuITMLjSuHdsDYSRC75nx0Zbffr-0_],
who was part of a historic moment in American sports. This week, take a photo tour
around the city and learn about some of the women in local and national history
who some of our parks were named in honor of, including city landmark Coit Tower,
the Randall Museum and Patricia's Green. Click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001OeoM8QPO7wcZZ8XW_IIMGO4C3xGzgkqGVygQpi7dCTJtOSbE5C6HUdGBfeV7M2IXZmCnMEVw5IaSLf6zEkIdckbJhUwXP6L7riPzXJNjWYM0aOgwqVO8cqGIW0l4Nl8Mnhkve6D4vcQ5lgtLE_UjstMZXQck3GH8rw-htmBPF_s=]

Do You Want to Be a Greenager?

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Greenagers program is under the
umbrella of the department's Youth Stewardship Program. It offers teens from the
Southeast Side of San Francisco a chance to play an important role in the community
by improving our city's green spaces and raising awareness.

Greenagers work in various parks and open spaces throughout San Francisco, meet
with various Rec and Park staff, community members and partners; and create place-based
projects and or projects based on issues they are interested in. Participants will
meet and work with teens their own age, collaborate with other youth organizations
and gain crucial skills in facilitating workshops, networking, public speaking,
teamwork, environmental education, and community engagement.

Help Name Our Trails in Glen Canyon Park!

Become a part of San Francisco history- help name our trails at Glen Canyon Park!
Beyond Glen Canyon Park's recreation center, ball field, and tennis courts lies
a large urban canyon that has incredible spring wildflower displays, dramatic rock
(chert) formations, and Islais Creek, one of the few remaining free-flowing creeks
in San Francisco. These 60 acres of wilderness, formerly referred to as the San
Miguel Hills, not only provide critical habitat for a wide array of wildlife,
but serve as a relaxing sanctuary from the city's urban bustle. An extensive network
of hiking trails leads through a variety of habitats, from the lush creekside
vegetation to the rocky grass- and scrublands of the canyon's steep eastern slope,
where a profusion of wildflowers blooms each spring.

The Glen Canyon Trails Project is a product of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood
Parks Bond, multiple California Habitat Conservation Fund grants and extensive
community input. The project is helping to repair existing trails and steps, provide
fencing for public safety and to protect sensitive habitat areas, provide erosion
control measures, restore native plants and provide wayfinding signage.

Kezar Triangle Opening Equinox Celebration on March 22

Come celebrate the Kezar Triangle Opening Equinox Celebration on Saturday, March
22, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., marking the completion of recent improvements to this
improved corner of Golden Gate Park, just south of Kezar Stadium and bordered by
Arguello Blvd, Kezar Drive and Lincoln Boulevard. With significant support from
the David and Carla Crane Foundation, Kezar Triangle was revitalized to promote
a holistic approach to a place that combines art, ecology, and community engagement.
Working in collaboration with the Recreation and Parks Department, the community,
and the San Francisco Parks Alliance, Miller Company Landscape Architects transformed
a somewhat underutilized meadow of the park into a green oasis crisscrossed by walking
paths. The site also features a "Plot to Grow Art," encircled by a beautiful fence
of woven willow boughs. The first art installation will involve a thatch of barley,
originally planted in Golden Gate Park to stabilize the sandy soil for other plants.
The event on March 22 features a community picnic, giant bubbles, circus workshops,
live music, art and nature tours, and activities for the whole family.
