Kezar Triangle Opening Equinox Celebration on March 22

Come celebrate the Kezar Triangle Opening Equinox Celebration on Saturday, March
22, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., marking the completion of recent improvements to this
improved corner of Golden Gate Park, just south of Kezar Stadium and bordered by
Arguello Blvd, Kezar Drive and Lincoln Boulevard. With significant support from
the David and Carla Crane Foundation, Kezar Triangle was revitalized to promote
a holistic approach to a place that combines art, ecology, and community engagement.
Working in collaboration with the Recreation and Parks Department, the community,
and the San Francisco Parks Alliance, Miller Company Landscape Architects transformed
a somewhat underutilized meadow of the park into a green oasis crisscrossed by walking
paths. The site also features a "Plot to Grow Art," encircled by a beautiful fence
of woven willow boughs. The first art installation will involve a thatch of barley,
originally planted in Golden Gate Park to stabilize the sandy soil for other plants.
The event on March 22 features a community picnic, giant bubbles, circus workshops,
live music, art and nature tours, and activities for the whole family.

Glen Canyon Park Playground Reopens

San Francisco Recreation and Parks celebrated the opening of Glen Canyon Park Playground
along with Supervisor Scott Wiener, the Glen Park Association, The Trust for Public
Land, the California Coastal Conservancy, and community members on Saturday, March
15. A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the celebration followed by refreshments and
arts and crafts for children and families. Above, community members and local kids
cut the ribbon with Supervisor Wiener (center), GM Phil Ginsburg (hat), Recreation
and Park Commissioner Allan Low (second from right) and Recreation and Park Commissioner
Eric McDonnell (far right). The project was made possible by the 2008 Clean and
Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, which was supported by 72% of San Francisco voters.
Improvements to the park's recreation center are upcoming under the 2012 Clean and
Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond. Rec and Park's Lisa Wayne Wins SPUR's MFAC Award for Managerial Excellence

On March 11, Lisa Wayne, Rec and Park's Director of Natural Areas, was honored by
the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001eZHXFxwsuHPdZhwWJzPu4LnPfYVDlZJ3pdMUj_CIfKnf5456TzjagL3CXpONedt_rsB8Zb1cNCUjflUbW4sdblPZN3H3D3MsQLgpkDkP4h1Vff93nlwqkw==])
with its 2014 MFAC Public Managerial Excellence Award.

Lisa was chosen for leading San Francisco's initiative to effectively manage and
care for its 32 designated Natural Areas, which comprise 868 acres of parkland
within the city. She has been the lead architect and visionary of the Recreation
and Park Department's Natural Areas Program since 1997. Lisa developed the programmatic
framework and recruited and hired 11 staff members, who now expertly steward these
areas for the city and its residents. As part of her role, she has led efforts to
restore and develop several urban trails, preserve and cultivate 10,000 native plants,
create a large and loyal volunteer corps contributing $4.7 million in volunteer
hours and develop the Significant Natural Resource Areas Management Plan, a highly
detailed, peer-reviewed planning document to guide the management of the city's
Natural Areas.

The Huffington Post Profiles Phil Ginsburg

Read The Huffington Post's recent profile of Phil Ginsburg [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001eZHXFxwsuHMKQ7Xjz5dBk9CaU4sXu0QB27_SEneEyVYj9QZ5rw0eh9TTI2giwrTldr9nWFgbEP3SD_XHz7qCAQUzdqabRxP6TRP_-HsWThL_sZwYJ7_fJa8bDxEUp3kHMyeDbitrgVlPMrQyKt3oW_XsDkZiZkfS4o8_tUIhGnUwinJvMLMdTKekxyP1nOBN3iWHGWxXApQ=],
general manager of San Francisco Recreation and Parks, who is making a difference
for city families.
Here's an excerpt: "Approaching his fifth anniversary in the job, Ginsburg already
has one of the longer tenures of a parks boss for a large city, and with his marathon
runner's endurance (he has run 15 of them, including two at just over 3 hours),
he is working to make the city's park system among the best in the world. What gives
SF top scores for parks? For starters, there's proximity. The vast majority of city
residents live within a 10-minute walk of the city's 220 parks, playgrounds and
athletic facilities, encompassing 4,000 acres. And the system is in a golden age
-- under Mayors Newsom's and Lee's enthusiastic leadership, San Francisco voters
overwhelmingly approved bonds in 2008 and 2012, authorizing $330 million for capital
improvements to their parks."

Do You Want to Be a Greenager?

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Greenagers program is under the
umbrella of the department's Youth Stewardship Program. It offers teens from the
southeast side of San Francisco a chance to play an important role in the community
by improving our city's green spaces and raising awareness.

Greenagers work in various parks and open spaces throughout San Francisco, meet
with various Rec and Park staff, community members and partners; and create place-based
projects and or projects based on issues they are interested in. Participants will
meet and work with teens their own age, collaborate with other youth organizations
and gain crucial skills in facilitating workshops, networking, public speaking,
teamwork, environmental education, and community engagement.

Help Name Our Trails in Glen Canyon Park!

Become a part of San Francisco history- help name our trails at Glen Canyon Park!
Beyond Glen Canyon Park's recreation center, ball field, and tennis courts lies
a large urban canyon that has incredible spring wildflower displays, dramatic rock
(chert) formations, and Islais Creek, one of the few remaining free-flowing creeks
in San Francisco. These 60 acres of wilderness, formerly referred to as the San
Miguel Hills, not only provide critical habitat for a wide array of wildlife,
but serve as a relaxing sanctuary from the city's urban bustle. An extensive network
of hiking trails leads through a variety of habitats, from the lush creekside
vegetation to the rocky grass- and scrublands of the canyon's steep eastern slope,
where a profusion of wildflowers blooms each spring.

The Glen Canyon Trails Project is a product of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood
Parks Bond, multiple California Habitat Conservation Fund grants and extensive
community input. The project is helping to repair existing trails and steps, provide
fencing for public safety and to protect sensitive habitat areas, provide erosion
control measures, restore native plants and provide wayfinding signage.
