Friends and Neighbors Celebrate the New Kezar Triangle

On Saturday, March 22, approximately 200 friends and neighbors came out to celebrate
recent improvements to Kezar Triangle, a little triangular section of Golden Gate
Park. With significant support from the David and Carla Crane Foundation, Kezar
Triangle was revitalized to promote a holistic approach to a place that combined
art, ecology and community engagement. More than $500,000 has been donated by the
David and Carla Crane Foundation to the San Francisco Parks Alliance and Friends
of Kezar Triangle. Celebration activities included tours about the landscape and
the Plot to Grow Art project, nature arts activities, a circus skills workshop and
face painting, bubble making, and music. Supervisor London Breed joined Rec and
Park Commission President Mark Buell, Commissioner Allan Low, general manager Phil
Ginsburg, SF Parks Alliance Executive Director Matt O'Grady, and Friends of Kezar
Triangle for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the renovation.

Rec and Park Celebrates Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month! It's been a great month of honoring some of the
women who've made an impact on our parks. This week, we wrap up Women's History
Month by recognizing the Ladybug Gardeners, who were on hand at the Recreation
and Park Commission meeting on March 20 to receive a Certificate of Appreciation
from GM Phil Ginsburg and Commission President Mark Buell.

The Ladybug Gardeners have been providing care to the extensive gardens of Upper
Noe Recreation Center since its re-opening in 2009 after a thorough renovation.
Led by the tireless neighborhood advocates, Joan Lionberger and Kate Huag, the
Ladybug Gardeners convene monthly volunteer work parties that engage a broad cross-section
of community members-- kids, seniors, recent and long-time residents. On any given
Saturday, you'll see Joan directing volunteers in planting, weeding, pruning and
beautifying the gardens along 30th street while Kate forges ahead in the establishment
of a native garden alongside the Sanchez Street corridor.

Above, from left to right: President Buell, Joan Lionberger, GM Phil Ginsburg, Ladybug
Gardener, Kimberly Kiefer, Deputy Director of Volunteer Programs.

Do You Want to Be a Greenager?

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Greenagers program is under the
umbrella of the department's Youth Stewardship Program. It offers teens from the
southeast side of San Francisco a chance to play an important role in the community
by improving our city's green spaces and raising awareness.

Greenagers work in various parks and open spaces throughout San Francisco, meet
with various Rec and Park staff, community members and partners; and create place-based
projects and or projects based on issues they are interested in. Participants will
meet and work with teens their own age, collaborate with other youth organizations
and gain crucial skills in facilitating workshops, networking, public speaking,
teamwork, environmental education, and community engagement.

Help Name Our Trails in Glen Canyon Park!

Become a part of San Francisco history- help name our trails at Glen Canyon Park!
Beyond Glen Canyon Park's recreation center, ball field, and tennis courts lies
a large urban canyon that has incredible spring wildflower displays, dramatic rock
(chert) formations, and Islais Creek, one of the few remaining free-flowing creeks
in San Francisco. These 60 acres of wilderness, formerly referred to as the San
Miguel Hills, not only provide critical habitat for a wide array of wildlife,
but serve as a relaxing sanctuary from the city's urban bustle. An extensive network
of hiking trails leads through a variety of habitats, from the lush creekside
vegetation to the rocky grass- and scrublands of the canyon's steep eastern slope,
where a profusion of wildflowers blooms each spring.

The Glen Canyon Trails Project is a product of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood
Parks Bond, multiple California Habitat Conservation Fund grants and extensive
community input. The project is helping to repair existing trails and steps, provide
fencing for public safety and to protect sensitive habitat areas, provide erosion
control measures, restore native plants and provide wayfinding signage.
