 My twins are just starting to army crawl around and I am a
 bit overwhelmed...

 In our home we turned the dining room room into the
 kids room so it is in between the living room &
 kitchen. With that said, we had the living room gated
 to their bedroom on one side and the living room had a
 door to hallway so we put childproof doorknob covers
 and a foam stopper to crack door open when we need. We
 also had a large "corral" setup in living room to keep
 them in one place since there were a lot of things we
 wanted them to stay away from (piano, curio/grandfather
 clock, fireplace, built in glass door cabinets, & 4
 seasons glassed wall hangings above couch). The coral
 was ESSENTIAL and let us us step out of the room. We
 used this with 2 extra long panels to extend corral.

 started climbing out of corral by 1.5 years so we then
 opened it up and used it as a wall to block the
 perimeter of the room (piano, curio/clock, fireplace, &
 toys not in rotation). They scaled that by 2.5 so were
 configured the room by using the corral as a tented
 crawl space in front of the fireplace (keeps it
 blocked), and added toddler trampoline to block
 another space (curio). We added a locked toy cabinet to
 the room to manage all the toys that have a gazillion
 parts (Mr Potato Head, megablocks, play dough, puzzles,
 & fake food. We also gated the top of the stairs with a
 tension gate (not recommend but we did it to save the
 molding). It ended up making a hole into the wall which
 is fixable w/ putty. We should have used a barrier
 between wall & gate to distribute tension to our old SF
 wall. The boys are almost 3. The kitchen has a door to
 the hallway and a swing door to their bedroom. We
 drilled latch locks (like the ones you use in hotel
 rooms to double lock your door). These are a lifesaver
 when you need to go to the bathroom or just need to
 cook peacefully. We also childproofed all the bottom
 cabinets & drawers. When our boys turned 2, they were
