William Hammond Hall Awards to Recognize City Gardeners on May 22

The sixth annual William Hammond Hall Awards, which recognize city gardeners each
year for their excellent work in our 220 parks, will take place on Thursday, May
 22, at 3:30 p.m., at Gleneagles Golf Course in McLaren Park.  Hosted by LiUNA Local
261, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission and the San Francisco Recreation
and Park Department.

celebrates the life of longtime Portola neighborhood resident and McLaren Park advocate
Franco Mancini at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in
McLaren Park. This special springtime potluck event features live music by local
 youth bands and rememberances of Franco's life.

Facebook, Zynga Volunteer and Make Connections with City Parks

Facebook had a great day of service out at Buena Vista Park on May 15, bringing 
almost 60 volunteers out to help plant 200 native plants, clean playground equipment
and support Larkin Street Youth Services with a graffiti abatement project. Everyone
at Rec and Park agrees that we "LIKE" Facebook volunteers and welcome them back 
anytime.

Zynga returned for its second annual day of service in the wedding meadow around
 Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park on May 17. Forty-five volunteers participated in 
planting shrubs, clearing trails for maintenance, and even hosting a youth-friendly
playground clean up. After all of the hard work, the group enjoyed a nice picnic
 at the meadow after a relaxing morning giving back to the park. As always, Zynga
delivers greatness!

Jefferson Award Winner/Volunteer Russell Breslauer Recognized

Russell Breslauer, a distinguished member of our volunteer corps and a dance instructor
at the Golden Gate Park Senior Center, was honored at the Recreation and Park Commission
meeting on May 15. Russell was recently the recipient of a Jefferson Award for Public
Service for his dedication, commitment and knack for getting his fellow seniors 
to get up on their feet and "get down."

Russell, a retired accounting instructor at Chabot College, has always had an interest
in folk dancing, and so for the past eight years, he's shared his love of dancing
as one of the more popular line dancing instructors at the center, where anywhere
between 300 and 500 seniors visit each day.

Every year, volunteers spend 153,000 hours of their time and energy improving our
parks and programs. On behalf of the Recreation and Park Department, we thank Russell
and all of our volunteers for their efforts.

REI Grant to Help City Trails

 recent grant of $5,000 to the Recreation and Park Department will  enable us to
 work with a group of volunteers to rebuild or maintain  approximately one mile 
of trails at three park sites - Bernal Heights  Park, Glen Canyon Park, and McLaren

Mobile Rec at Hamilton Rec Center This Saturday, May 24

Come out to our Mobile Rec event this Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
Hamilton Recreation Center in the Western Addition. We will have a rock wall, slack
lining, disc golf, skateboarding/ramps & BMX bikes on site. We will also provide
 safety equipment. Mobile recreation is a free, kid-friendly event. Get out and 
play!
