It's Time for Reindeer Romp!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Santa is sending our four favorite reindeer, Belle, Holly, Peppermint, and Velvet
to spread holiday cheer to Bay Area children of all ages. From November 21 through
January 1, these majestic animals will be on display at the Zoo to teach us all
about how and where they live in the wild. So put on that bright-red scarf, pick
 up a hot chocolate at Cafe Playfield, and head on over to the historic Playfield
Lawn, right next to the spectacular Elinor Friend Playground.
can be great caretakers of our planet. Do you know a kid who is crazy about composting
or concerned about species extinction? Sign them up for Conservation Club (for kids
ages 9 to 12), where we'll help young
environmentalists take action while learning more about what they can do to make
 a difference. The first bi-monthly meeting is November 15. More information. Conservation Brown Bag Lecture Series
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases pose a growing threat to global health,
which is why protecting global health requires a strong network to gather data,
assess risks, investigate threats, and influence positive change. Join us in welcoming
Karen Saylors, Ph.D., a medical anthropologist with 14 years of experience designing
and implementing field research projects in emerging infectious diseases and behavioral
change strategies. Come hear Karen discuss her work with Metabiota managing field
surveillance of zoonotic disease transmission in Central Africa and Vietnam and
the socio-cultural and behavioral factors influencing the spread of disease.

When Dinosaurs Roamed the Zoo
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A newly installed garden planted across from the South American Tropical Building
at the eastern end of the Zoo is a wonderful new exhibit of prehistoric plants.
Non-flowering plants that resemble palms called cycads are also known as "living
 fossils" because they thrived in the low light and high moisture of the tropical
forests back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Dinosaurs fed on many of these plants
and ferns. Magnolias for example, are among the earliest flowering plants, and fossils
show that this species has been around for over 100 million years. A bird-of-paradise
flower, Strelitzia reginae, is grown in this garden and is one of our earliest flowering
specimens. Please visit the Prehistoric Garden and learn about the land before time.
