Annual Turkey Cook-Off on November 21

Celebrate Thanksgiving with us at our 15th Annual Turkey Cook-Off, a no-recipes-barred
cooking competition between the staff and kids at our various recreation facilities,
Friday, November 21, from 7 to 10 p.m., at the Lake Merced Boathouse (Skyline Blvd.
and Harding Road).  All ages are welcome at this free event.  Live entertainment

Save the Date: Rec and Park's 85th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting on December 4

Kick off the holiday season with SF Rec and Park! Save the date for our 85th Annual
Holiday Tree Lighting at McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park on Thursday, December
 4, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Enjoy live entertainment, caroling, a cookie factory,
 sledding, snow play, carnival rides and a visit from Santa.  Free!
Donate a toy for the Operation Dream and SF Police Department's annual toy drive!
 Help everyone enjoy a happy holiday season by bringing a new, unwrapped toy to 
the event and dropping it off to any of our several donation barrels located at 
points throughout the event.

reopening of Boeddeker Park in the city's Tenderloin neighborhood, Wednesday, December

Hoops Summit Scores One for Girls Sports

It was a great day for basketball on November 15, as Rec  and Park hosted its annual
Hoops Summit for Girls at Hamilton Rec  Center. Seventy-five young athletes joined
Rec and Park coaches for  drills, games and other activities throughout the day,
 culminating in a certificate/award session for all participants.  Rec and Park 
is proud of its classes and events that encourage our young female athletes to get
out and play!

Golden Gate Park Lawn Bowling Green Reopens

The Recreation and Park Department, San Francisco Lawn Bowling Club, San Francisco
Parks Alliance and park advocates celebrated on November 18 the reopening of the
 Lawn Bowling Green in Golden Gate Park.

The Lawn Bowling Green renovation included an accessible concrete pathway and gutter
surrounding the existing green and new metal fences and gates on the north and south
ends of the facility.  The project was funded through the Community Opportunity 
Fund (COF), a neighborhood park capital improvement program from the 2008 Clean 
and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond.

Community Planting Day Celebrates New McLaren Park Trail Connector

Friends, neighbors and city officials, including Supervisor Malia Cohen, Rec and
 Park Commissioners Allan Low and Maggie Wei, and Rec and Park GM Phil Ginsburg,
 joined together for a community planting day on November 15 to celebrate the completion
of the new McLaren Park Trail Connector.
The project was funded by over $300,000 from the Trails Improvement Program under
the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond and more than $174,000 in grant 
funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).  The projects were further
supported by a variety of volunteers including Volunteers for Outdoor California,
which provided a value estimate of more than $113,000.

Operation Dream Helps City Kids

KTVU features Operation Dream, which has helped make the holidays brighter for hundreds
of low-income families for nearly 20 years.  In spite of some recent obstacles, 
here's how you can help Operation Dream continue its work, including making a toy
donation at Rec and Park's upcoming Holiday Tree Lighting on December 4.
