The Zoo Celebrates Earth Day: April 19

Join us for Earth Day on Sunday, April 19, to celebrate “Urban Biodiversity” and the 5th Anniversary of Greenie’s Conservation Corner. This year’s theme supports the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and UN Decade on Biodiversity, which aims to inspire Zoo visitors to take action for biodiversity. We will highlight Greenie’s Conservation Corner, which showcases organic gardening, rain water collection, solar power generation, and repurposing material, such as used in lumber, garbage cans, wine barrels, and other materials that would have gone to landfill.  All activities are from 11 am to 3 pm and are free with paid Zoo admission. Click here for more information. (https://t.e2ma.net/click/cm2uf/o330mu/ovhq5b)

The birds have arrived and that means one thing; Spring Migration Bird Walks are here!  Last month, bird walkers spotted 43 species of birds including the return of the hooded oriole and two species of woodpeckers.

We hope to see you at the final bird walk of the spring on Thursday, April 23 at 8:30 am. For details, click here. (https://t.e2ma.net/click/cm2uf/o330mu/4niq5b)

On Friday, April 24, join us for a delightful evening of dining and dancing at ZooFest, the San Francisco Zoological Society’s most anticipated event of the season. This year’s theme, “Celebrating Champions,” pays tribute to the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants and celebrates the importance of physical and mental activity for animals and humans alike. The gala will feature a sports-themed live auction featuring exclusive, one-of-a-kind ZooFest offerings. Proceeds from ZooFest supports the Zoo's mission to connect people with wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action.

Please reserve your table or ticket today! For more information, please call the Development Office  at (415) 753-7173 x9 or e-mail ZooFest at sfzoo.org.

Each week includes Keeper Talks, observation walks, and lots of hands-on activities that keep kids engaged. Summer Zoo Camp for children entering Pre-K to Grade 7 is weekly from June 1 to August 14.

Spots in our "wildly" summer Zoo Camp are filling up quickly!  Register (https://t.e2ma.net/click/cm2uf/o330mu/kgjq5b) today!  Questions? E-mail ZooCamp at sfzoo.org or check out our Camp FAQ (https://t.e2ma.net/click/cm2uf/o330mu/08jq5b) page.

Frogs On the Loose

Sierra Nevada Yellow-legged Frogs: Into the Wild

The last of the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog tadpoles have transformed into froglets. One hundred and five frogs have begun the process to prepare for release back into the wild. Last week, staff began the inoculation process to create an immunity against the fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), prior to release.  If successful, this experimental process will provide a vaccination-like immunity to allow the Zoo-raised frogs to live in a Bd-positive environment without succumbing to the disease as a naïve frog might.  After three weeks of exposure, the frogs will be treated with an antifungal medication and given a health exam before their voyage to Lake Tahoe for release in June.  This unique process of inoculation is part of a scientific collaboration with San Francisco State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Fun Facts: Fishing Cats

Have you ever heard of a cat that likes being wet? The fishing cat spends much of its time in and around water “fishing” for prey, as its name implies, which include fish, frogs, crayfish or any small mammal that it might catch on land. These small cats, weighing between 13 and 25 pounds, are found in dense forests in India and Southeast Asia. A fishing cat will hang out on a log or branch above the water, waiting for a fish to swim by before it pounces and brings its meal to shore. Fishing cats have two layers of dense fur which help to protect them and keep their skin warm, and webbing between their toes which helps them swim and walk in muddy environments like swamps and riverbanks. Like cheetahs, they cannot retract their claws. Come visit our fishing cats outside the Lion House, or watch them fishing in this video (https://t.e2ma.net/click/cm2uf/o330mu/cmmq5b).
