Beach Chalet Athletic Fields to Open This Saturday, December 12
The highly anticipated opening of the Beach Chalet Athletic Fields in Golden Gate
Park is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, from 1 to 4 p.m.  Enjoy food trucks,
family fun and athletic activities throughout the day.

Despite Soggy Conditions, 86th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting a Bright Spot in the
 Week
The Mission Rec Center Rebels girls basketball team (above) and Rec and Park's all-girls
Bay Sox baseball team were on hand to help light the tree at our 86th annual holiday
tree lighting event on December 3. This year's holiday train in front of McLaren
 Lodge in Golden Gate Park pays homage to women and girls in sports and highlights
some of the Bay Area's most famous athletes.  Peanut Louie-Harper, one of the city's
home-grown and most accomplished tennis players, was also on hand to light the tree.
Hundreds of kids and families were on hand to enjoy carnival rides, live entertainment,
games, crafts and visits with Santa.

Youth Basketball Free Throw Contest at Sunset Rec on December 12
Calling all hoopsters! Rec and Park, in partnership with the SF Elks Lodge No. 3,
hosts a Hoop Shoot Basketball Free Throw Contest for girls and boys ages 8-13, Saturday,
December 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Sunset Rec Center (2201 Lawton Street)
 FREE!  No pre-registration is necessary.  Free lunch and t-shirts provided to the

All aboard for a trip back in time as the Conservatory of Flowers presents an all
new garden railway display celebrating the centennial of San Francisco's 1915 Panama-Pacific
International Exposition.
In an enchanting display landscaped with hundreds of dwarf plants and several water
features, model trains wend their way through the festive fairgrounds, zipping past
whimsical recreations of the fair's most dazzling monuments and amusements, including
the Tower of Jewels, Palace of Fine Arts, and more. Interpretive signs, memorabilia
and interactive activities throughout help visitors to understand the colorful history
of the grand fair that signaled San Francisco's recovery from the 1906 earthquake.
