La Voz Latina Recognized for Its Work in the Tenderloin

Supervisor Jane Kim joined GM Phil Ginsburg and Recreation and Park Commission President
Mark Buell in honoring La Voz Latina during a commission meeting on January 15. 
La Voz Latina is a community organizing project and resource center for Latino families
and individuals living in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco.

La Voz Latina was founded in 2005 by community organizers who were seeing that many
Latino families were moving to the Tenderloin neighborhood and needed greater advocacy
for their unique needs. The program is rooted in tenant's rights advocacy and over
the years has expanded to include public safety work, neighborhood improvement campaigns,
parent support groups, a leadership development program, and much more.

Most recently, La Voz Latina has been active in building community around Sgt. John
Macaulay Park, a .21-acre park in the Tenderloin. Small in size, Macaulay Park has
enormous potential in a neighborhood with limited green space for kids to play and
enjoy.

Coach Ken Receives Hearty Thanks from Rec Park Commission

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission recently honored Kenneth Pratt 
(third from the left), an outstanding volunteer who has generously donated between
400 and 600 hours of his time and energy each year since 1993 to our city's recreational
programs.

Since 1996, Ken has served as a basketball and track and field coach for the Recreation
and Park Department's Girls Athletics Program, helping to ensure that all youth 
have the opportunity to discover the world of sports and get out and play. He is
 exceptional in his ability to  motivate young people to develop their talents to
their full potential,  leading fitness programs at Boeddeker Park, Gene Friend Recreation
 Center and Pacific Art Summer Camp. He has taught first-aid and  photography in
 the Department's Latchkey Program, and has served as a  mentor to recreation leaders
in training. In generously sharing his  time, knowledge and talents, Coach Ken is
an outstanding role model for  our youth.
When he's not sharing his talents with us at the Recreation and Park Department,
 Coach Ken serves as the Head of Delegation for the San Francisco Branch of the 
Special Olympics.
At his commendation ceremony on January 15, Coach Ken was surrounded by friends 
and coworkers rooting him on.

Girls in Sports Extravaganza on January 31 Celebrates Girls and Women in Sports 
Day

Girls Extravaganza! January 31, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion. This clinic
is designed for girls, ages 5-17, to learn new skills in basketball, volleyball,
 golf, soccer, softball and tennis. Girls will be separated into age-appropriate
 groups and will rotate through each sport, learning basic skills and having fun
 while meeting coaches and making new friends. Cost is $10 per child. Register online
