Koret-Taube South American
Tropical Rainforest and Aviary Opens July 11
(https://t.e2ma.net/click/gxlcg/o330mu/g9qoac)
The Koret-Taube South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary will officially open on Saturday, July 11. The 200,000 cubic foot habitat is a complete renovation of the original Works Administration (WPA) aviary constructed in 1938, and features multiple animal species, from the stiff-tailed ruddy duck to the smokey jungle frog and the two-toed sloth. Approximately 50 reptiles and amphibians, the first significat herpetological collection ever at the Zoo, include a South American green snake and a Surinam “star-fingered” toad. Blue headed macaws and Cuban amazons are some of the free flying birds exhibited throughout the Rainforest and Aviary, and high-tech feeders tucked into a huge fallen tree will challenge and engage the birds to find their food as they do in the wild. The South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary will connect you with some of the unusual and rare animals that inhabit the rainforest and bring attention to the disastrous loss of habitat caused by deforestation.
SFZS Members get a first sneak peek on July 11 from 9 - 10 am during a special Members Morning Preview.

Water's Extreme Journey Now Open
(https://t.e2ma.net/click/gxlcg/o330mu/w1roac)
Feeling the effects of the drought? Then come learn more about the importance of water at the Zoo's newest temporary exhibit, Water's Extreme Journey (https://t.e2ma.net/click/gxlcg/o330mu/cusoac), located adjacent to the Koret-Taube South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary. This 1,000-square-foot maze transforms each visitor into a drop of water entering a watershed. Visitors will travel through different watershed habitats while learning how to make cleaner choices.

Fun Fact: Aquatic Caecilians
Aquatic caecilians are found in seasonally flooded grasslands, rivers, lakes and marshes in Colombia and Venezuela. Also knows as “Rio Cauca caecilians,” aquatic caecilians are limbless. Females give birth to 3-7 live young after a gestation period of 220 days. Young are born with external gills which help them survive the birthing process. After their first year, juveniles are half the size of an adult; with adults reaching between 17- 21 inches in length. Aquatic caecilians are dark grey or black in color, with ringed body segments and skin covering their eyes, with which they can sense light and dark shapes. They have a strong skull which they can use for digging or burrowing. Aquatic caecilians hunt by using their sense of smell and feed on invertebrates, including insects and worms. Although sometimes mistakenly called a “rubber eel,” caecilians are neither fish nor snakes nor worms, but amphibians. They take breath from the water’s surface and can also breathe through their skin like other amphibians such as frogs and salamanders. Most species of caecilians live underground and are rarely seen by humans. The Zoo’s aquatic caecilian will soon be on exhibit in the Koret-Taube South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary opening on July 11!
