SF Marathon Supports "Let's Move" Programs

This Sunday, The San Francisco Marathon events will fill the city's streets, bridges
and parks with more than 25,000 runners. For their 2015 event, the SF Marathon selected
RPD's "Let's Move" program as their Select Charity. Let's Move pairs RPD recreation
specialists directly with San Francisco elementary schools in the underserved Bayview/Hunters
Point community to give young students access to physical education. With Let's 
Move, elementary students receive recreation opportunities before, after and during
the school day, five days a week.
If you're running on Sunday, know someone who is running, or want to support health
and fitness education for San Francisco youth, then please join The San Francisco

Summer Fun at Little Hollywood Park

There was cause for a big celebration at Little Hollywood Playground on July 17,
 as Supervisor Malia Cohen, Recology, City College of San Francisco Board Trustee
Alex Randolph and Visitacion Valley neighbors joined Rec and Park for a summer barbecue
and ribbon cutting event marking recent improvements to the park. The park's improvements
include new amenities like benches, barbecue pits and picnic areas, improved landscaping
and irrigation upgrades, and were funded by the City's General Fund and Open Space
program.

to taking a bike ride along JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park, our city parks are full
of exciting and wonderful discoveries that appeal to the young and young-at-heart.

Farewell to a Friend

A bit of sad news: Longtime employee Percy Chu, who began his career with the Recreation
and Park Department in 1952 and who spent 52 years with us before retiring in 2004,
passed away earlier this month.

Percy was a fixture at Chinese Recreation Center throughout his career and was most
noted for being a tremendous basketball player and coach. There's a rich tradition
of basketball in the Chinatown community that dates back to the 1930s, and Percy
 was a big part of that, having played with the San Francisco Saints traveling team
and coaching many generations of players after that.

Our condolences go out to the Chu family and to his friends who knew and loved him.

"Divots and Corks" Women's Golf Event at Sharp Park on July 30

The San Francisco Mayor's Women's Golf Council invites women golfers of all levels--
beginners and beyond-- to Divots and Corks, an eight-hole golf scramble event at
 Sharp Park Golf Course on July 30, from 4-7 p.m.  The Council was founded in July
2014 by Mayor Ed Lee in support of his passion for San Francisco golf and his interest
in seeing the game promoted and played more.  Event cost is $25 per person, including
