New At The Zoo

François Langur

On Tuesday July 21st, the Primate Staff was delighted to discover that our François langur family had grown by one during the night! This infant joins the family with his 8 month older brother on exhibit in the Doelger Primate Center. It's always a great way to start the day with an orange François langur infant!  Please come by and see the newest addition and watch him grow up with his new family.

Basilisk Lizards

After a two-month wait, and over the course of four days of active hatching, we recently welcomed six offspring Basilisk lizards to the Zoo. The proud parents are on exhibit in the newly renovated South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary (https://t.e2ma.net/click/of9gg/o330mu/wp2sbc), while the six offspring are in the Herpetological room where we can monitor them to make sure that they grow big and strong. Basilisks do not have any parental care in the wild, as eggs are laid in the soil and left by the mother to hatch and fend for themselves. Basilisks are a lizard species known for speed and the ability to run on top of water to evade predators, giving them the common nickname of "Jesus Lizards."

New Children Zoo Corrals are A-Ok
The construction on the new corrals in the contact yard is complete and we are introducing a variety of animals from both the Red and Yellow Barns into this new area. Staff are exploring new ideas to utilize this space, with the emphasis on enrichment and farm programming.

Fun Fact: Blue-Bellied Rollers

Blue-bellied rollers are found in lowland savannas and forest edge in Sub-Saharan Central Africa, from Senegal east to South Sudan.  They feed primarily on insects, perching in a tree and scanning the ground for prey.  They have also been known to eat fruits and the occasional small reptile. Blue-bellied rollers will flock to the edge of a forest fire to eat the insects escaping the fire. They have an average wingspan of about 14 inches and are about 11 inches in length. Both males and females are similar in appearance. Blue-bellied rollers get the “roller” part of their name from their elaborate courtship rituals which involve loud vocalizations and twisting and turning flight.  They are territorial and live in groups of 3 – 6 individuals.  A clutch of 2 – 3 eggs is laid during the summer months and incubated and raised by both parents.  Juveniles become independent by 40 days.  Come and see the Zoo’s pair of blue-bellied rollers and their two offspring in the African Savanna Aviary.
