Basketball Fever in the Bay Area: SF Pro-Am Kicks Off this Week
As local hoops fans celebrate the Golden State Warriors' incredible championship
run, the 36th season of the San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am Summer Basketball League
kicks off at Kezar Pavilion in Golden Gate Park this week.
For the past 35 years, basketball fans have enjoyed watching pros, college players
and international stars battle in a highly competitive and equally entertaining
brand of basketball throughout the summer months. Supported by the San Francisco
Recreation and Park Department, the league runs from June through August and features
evening games Monday through Thursday for the men's teams and on Saturday afternoons
for the women's.
The best part of the league is the admission price: free.
Fans of all ages flock to the games in hopes of seeing some high-flying dunks, crisp
passing, and maybe an NBA player or two. Last summer, Warriors star Stephen Curry
stopped by and promptly scored 43 points in his pro-am debut, a prelude to his historic
MVP season.

KQED: SF's Groundbreaking Urban Agriculture Program Turns One
KQED's Bay Area Bites highlights the city's new Urban Agriculture Program, which
is celebrating the completion of its first year. "Available open space in San
Francisco may be scarce, as real estate prices continue to rise and prominent urban
ag projects have given way to condo development, but the hunger for urban agriculture
shows no sign of waning. Wait list times for some community gardens are upwards
of several years. A new city program is addressing the insatiable demand by providing
resources to San Francisco gardeners and helping them find places to get their hands
dirty and grow their own food." Click here to read the entire article. to McLaren Lodge, June 18 through August 14. Commissioned by the San Francisco Arts
Commission [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Vv8NAsmuKC1e526eiT4rYrN2EvlbHb7C4vQufYLhgcsM3XJ-iguWGbPUjcHJaahEq9_BmsPbRUVqx31xPl6FqqX5V4XnUr7HZu_y_vb5XuG1Zl8LvTwmKf3uQzqZQ--A2E66uGfCA1mkCZUH9co8luq7lQ_KBrdmPHLjxrqQ1QZ49a5cE2bd6A==&c=ERoLpv5_qdKC5KnR5ZbOtRfI0dsQ8mN2K-_1pOJRNig3O-QllaZ5Vg==&ch=GQkcttvCsajjJD_vci-MWKw0vSIV_zO_bNwCvSag5EuZo8oZCHDklQ==],
the series investigates the intersection of nature and culture by showcasing six
very different monuments from the City's Civic Art Collection: the John McLaren
statue (ca. 1944), Portals of the Past (1909), the Sara B. Cooper Memorial (1939),
The Ball Thrower (1889), Poeme de la Vigne (1877-1878) and the William McKinley
Memorial (1904). The paintings are unified through the use of silkscreened line
work, in which the artist hints at overlooked details, inspiring the public to look
more inquisitively at the monuments and their surroundings. According to the artist,
"The city's history is written on its layered architecture, public and private spaces,
and the monuments are part of this story."
Reception sponsored by ArtCare [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Vv8NAsmuKC1e526eiT4rYrN2EvlbHb7C4vQufYLhgcsM3XJ-iguWGfdiPr_6bFM2IgdHVrXF8hJxd3ajlX22LWtlBIo8kvhk4oQQvwlt3ak6oQ-rQz06dgAzZBHFJArHK52DZxZTx8SIJljPUU56KBxCtcv6AZcGAfLbOGNPSzw=&c=ERoLpv5_qdKC5KnR5ZbOtRfI0dsQ8mN2K-_1pOJRNig3O-QllaZ5Vg==&ch=GQkcttvCsajjJD_vci-MWKw0vSIV_zO_bNwCvSag5EuZo8oZCHDklQ==]
