There are many things to celebrate this Sunday as June 21 is also World Giraffe Day, the official first day of summer and the longest day of the year! We have some great things in store for visitors to learn more about Floyd, our incredible "giraffe dad," along with special keeper talks and enrichment activities the whole family can enjoy near the Giraffe Barn.

Donations are still needed for the Rhino Ball Project for our black rhinos including Boone (pictured here) who is named after San Francisco 49er Alex Boone (https://t.e2ma.net/click/glg8f/o330mu/s2dv9b). We're very close but not quite at the finish line so the project has been extended for 15 more days. To donate today, click here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/glg8f/o330mu/8uev9b).

A Win for Rhinos and Elephants

Assembly Bill 96 (AB96) passed the California Assembly 62-14!  The bill, named for the number of elephants killed daily in Africa, now moves on to the Senate for a vote before going to the Governor for final approval. AB96 is an important step in the fight against illegal wildlife trade in California. Passage of the bill would ban the sale of ivory and rhino horn in California which is one of the top markets in the country. To learn more about AB96 visit www.96elephants.org (https://t.e2ma.net/click/glg8f/o330mu/4fgv9b).

Fun Fact: Southern Two-Toed Sloth

The southern two-toed sloth is found in lowland and montane tropical forest canopies of the Amazon Basin of South America. They feed on leaves, twigs, berries, fruits and the occasional insect or small animal. Southern two-toed sloths spend most of their time high up in the forest canopy, only coming to the ground once a week to defecate. Their diet of vegetation takes a long time to digest and food can remain in the digestive tract for up to a month. Because they spend most of their time hanging in the trees, their fur grows in the opposite direction of other mammals and has special grooves which host algae. This algae serves as camouflage. Females reach sexual maturity at three years and males between four and five years. They have a gestation period of six months and give birth to one offspring that will cling to its mother’s belly for five weeks and remain with her for several months. Southern two-toed sloths can live up to 20 years in the wild and 30 to 40 years in captivity. The Zoo has a new two-toed sloth, which will be joining our current sloth, Moony B. Finch, on exhibit in the newly remodeled Koret-Taube South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary (https://t.e2ma.net/click/glg8f/o330mu/k8gv9b) opening on July 11.
