South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary Challenge Grant
San Francisco Zoo is preparing the grand unveiling of the South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary this summer! As often happens with any construction project, however, costs have come in over budget. Fortunately, several members of our Zoo’s Board of Directors have created a challenge grant to support the closing of this financial gap. This challenge will match $1 for every $1 in new capital gifts and pledges, up to $250,000, between now and the opening of the Tropical Rainforest!
The South American tropical rainforest is home to more than half the world’s plants and animals; it provides 20% of our planet’s oxygen; and its flora supply elements in 25% of human medications. Yet this ecosystem is severely threatened by habitat encroachment that destroys more than 80,000 acres of rainforest each day and the animal trafficking of many of its species. In Brazil alone, at least 12 million wild animals are poached each year. Birds are particularly threatened: of the 145 rainforest parrot species, 46 are at risk of extinction.
To inspire caring for and to bring to life this critical ecosystem for San Francisco, San Francisco Zoo is transforming its historic WPA-era Aviary Building into a stunning South American Tropical Rainforest habitat lush with native plants and animals. Visitors will experience free-flight South American birds soaring throughout the space as sloths move among the trees and our new reptiles and amphibians perch in tanks and ponds. A children’s tunnel half-hidden among the vegetation will lead to up-close viewing of a termite colony while a magnificent Cathedral Fig Tree and indoor waterfall will create an amazing sense of space.
The Zoo is proud to present the remarkable contributions that the rainforest makes to environmental and human health while teaching visitors how to help stop illegal animal trafficking. Please click here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/wlnag/o330mu/4v8bac) to make a donation now and help us take advantage of this challenge grant! Naming opportunities in the Rainforest are still available.
If you would like more information, please contact Katharine Morris at (415) 753-7108 or katharinem at sfzoo.org. Thank you for your consideration – we look forward to seeing you in the beautiful new South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary soon!
